I am new to crochet and can do chains and DC, but this pattern is talking about working in rounds. I have checked out how to do this and it says something about making a small ring/ circle of around 4-6 chains, but, this pattern is telling me to make a chain of 59 sts and I have no idea how to continue. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

What comes next in your instructions? Does it say to join with a slip stitch or something else?
I’d have to rotate the photo to be able to read and try to understand what it says. Right now I don’t have time. I’m sorry.
Is it possible that the note about working in the round is intended for a later stage of the patter ? The instructions are given in “rows,” not rounds, and the instructions include the word “turn” which indicates working flat.
Working in the round can mean two things and maybe your research into tutorials on this has sent you in the wrong direction.
I’m not great at crochet so I will likely use the wrong terms here but I’ll try to explain.
Working in the round starting with a magic ring, which you describe, is for a flat circle or shape of crochet that starts in the centre (those 4 to 6 stitches in a ring) and works around the outside edge with each round making a wider ring around the centre point. The fabric remains flat.
Working in the round can also mean a three dimensional shape, like a cylinder, where the work is not turned at the end of the row but instead the beginning joins the end to form the bottom of the cylinder and subsequent rounds are added which build up from this initial row. The fabric forms in a 3 dimensional shape like a tin can.
Looking at the picture I would imagine the body being worked in the round (the second description above) to make a 3D shape without a seam. However there appears to be no mention of joining in the round and the instructions are for working flat.
I would suggest following the instruction word for word as patterns tend to work out correctly even if they don’t seem to make sense based on our expectations.
Therefore, for now, ignore what you learned about the magic ring starting point and just make the chain of 59 and follow the row instructions, working into the second chain from the hook and along the row with 1 dc in each chain.
Turn and work row 2, dc across, turn, work row 3, dc across, turn… and so on.
Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on.
Thank you so much for your detailed reply, it is really helpful. I will try again and see what happens !
You’re welcome and good luck, hope it goes well.
If it doesn’t work out though do come back and ask again. I’m not really a crocheter but others will help.
What @Creations said. There’s a difference between Rows and Rounds, and the pattern is currently having you work back and forth in rows. I suspect it will later have you join something into a circle / cylinder and work in rounds, unless all of the pieces are made flat and seamed later.
You could read ahead in the pattern so you know what to expect. You’ll want the technique you described of making a few chains and joining into a ring for working the face, which is a flat circle.
For now, trust the pattern and do exactly as it says. And if you get stuck, we’re here to help!
Thank you so much . I will continue following the pattern and keep my fingers crossed!!
