I started this pattern with Rowan Glace cotton this weekend, I’ve done the rib but now I’m stuck.
First I need to say, I’ve done cables but always from written instructions, so this only has a chart and it is throwing me! The cable/lace pattern is a 26 stitch block, repeated 6 times for the size I’m doing but when I work the stitches for the pattern block, I end up with 24 not 26 - there is a note at the beginning of the instructions that says
“Take care to ensure each decrease or increase of pattern is matched by an increase or decrease. If there are insufficient stitches to work both, work end stitches of rows in stocking stitch”
I really don’t understand what that means Anyone out there working on this pattern who can give me some insight?
Welcome to the forum!
Check the across the row in the chart and make sure you see an equal number of increases and decreases. Now check your knitting and see that you have the pairs of increases (possibly yarn overs) and decreases (maybe ssk or k2tog). Sometimes it’s easy to neglect a yarn over. Markers between the 26 stitch blocks will make it easier to tell where the missing sts are.
If you would like, you can post a photo of the first couple of rows of the chart. Don’t give us any more due to designer copyright.
There may be decreases for the body or armholes on the vest. If they fall between a pattern increase and its paired decrease, then don’t work the matching increase or decrease of the pair. Substitute stockinette stitch for that repeat. That way the vest won’t be increasing when you think you are decreasing or vice versa.
Stitch markers are a great idea, thank you. I’ve attached a bit of the chart with my notes. I cannot figure this out. I seem to be 4 stitches short every pattern repeat and I repeat the pattern 6 times!
How do I figure out where to add these back without messing up the overall pattern?
Yes, I see the confusion. The blue underline below are the paired increases and decreases. The red underline are 3 stitch knit/purl cables, not decreases.
The red underline cables form the edges around the diamond patterns. They should be defined in the chart key but maybe they were inadvertently left off.
YES! I see it now! Thank you so much! Good grief, without your help this would have ended up in WIP jail!

Another project saved from incarceration! It’s really a stunning vest, typically Martin Storey. Please do post a photo when you finish. It’ll be a joy to see.
