Romantic hand knits -gigi: venting frustrations

Arg. I think I’m starting over on Romantic Hand Knits “Gigi” scarf for about the 10th time at least. Last time I tried I got about half way through the second time through the lace pattern and realized I’d dropped a stitch a few rows back. While trying to recover… well, I ended up unravveling the whole thing.

Anyway I’ve been trying this pattern in DiVe Teseo yarn (the green one). It’s no Tilli Tomas Disco Lights, but I wasn’t about to pay that much for yarn this soon into knitting. I’m seriously considdering it now, because after going to a store and discussing gauge with someone I realized my scarf in DiVe Teseo will never be nearly as nice. Not that I expeceted it to be.

I normally don’t mind restarting something. But the fact that I have to do this i-cord again each time is really starting to make me tear my hair out. I’ve been re-using as much of the yarn as I can, so consequently it’s shedding little fluffs of green lint every once in a while. I’m very annoyed.

This shouldn’t be this hard. I know how to do everything required to knit this thing. But for whatever reason Gigi and I seem to be starting rocky relationship. Any tips on how to cope with a pattern that no matter what you do you just can’t seem to get right? Am I just being too stubborn by continuing to try?

Thread a strand of thin, smooth yarn through a row where you know you’ve got it right, or after every pattern repeat. Just put the yarn on a tapestry needle and thread it through the stitches that are on the needle. This way, if you have to tear something out, you only have to go down to where your last lifeline was. The lifeline itself will just pull out when you don’t need it anymore.

wow! that seems so simple that I should have thought of that! thank you so much.
