Roll-brim hats... how to control?

I’m thinking about making a roll-brim hat as a gift. I have a roll-neck (factory made) sweater and I like the look. How do you control the “roll”? Does it depend on the gauge? For a tight roll, should one use different size needles from the main part of the hat?

i have a pattern that tells me that to give it a tighter roll to cast on about 10 stitches fewer than what the rest of the hat is going to be knitted in and then increase in the second round to add those 10 back in.

i don’t know that i really noticed that much of a difference though and got the most control out of blocking afterwards really.

What’s blocking?

blocking is when you shape the finished knitted piece, usually by dampening it and streching and smoothing as necessary

really? does amy have a video about that? sounds like a powerful but perilous technique

lol…it is only perilous if you use hot water and agitation to do it…but we would call that felting! Here is a knitty article on blocking.

You totally rock! I have been looking online everywhere for a good blocking article. I have decided that January is the month of blocking.
