I’m new to the forum, kinda stumbled across the site looking for how to do a right/left cross-stitch cable. I’ve seen pictures and stuff, and i’ve searched throught youtube and alot of sites to figure out how to do it. the pattern is worked in 4 rows, over 8 stitches. What i can’t figure out is how many stitches go over the cable needle. the 1st row is p2,k4,p2. do i purl in the front and knit in the back? Please Help.:???:
We need a little more detail. From what you have so far, it looks like you have a 4-stitch cable surrounded by two purl stitches on each side to set it off.
Usually with that set-up, you’d always work the 4 side stitches (2 + 2) in reverse stockinette–purl on the right side, knit on the wrong side. The 4 center cable stitches would be worked in stockinette–knit on the right side, purl on the wrong side–until you have to cross the cables–2 on the cable needle and two on the main needle.

Up at the top of the directions there should be a definition of terms used in your pattern. Or there may be a side bar that defines the cable (C4F, C4B for example). If it’s p2, k4, p2, that’s usually p2, put 2sts on a cable needle (hold in back for a right cross or hold in front for a left cross) knit the next 2sts, then knit the 2sts from the cable needle and finally purl2.

RIGHT CROSS-STITCH CABLE (Worked over 8 sts)
Row 1 (RS): P2, k4, p2.
Row 2: K2, p4, wrapping yarn twice around needle for each purl st, k2.
Row 3: P2, sl 4 WYIB, dropping extra 4 wraps; return these 4 sts to LH needle, pass the last 2 sts slipped over the first 2 and k them in this crossed position, p2.
Row 4: K2, p4, k2.
Rep these 4 rows for Right Cross-St Cable.
thing is that maybe i’m confusing the cabling technique for this. usually for a cable, e.g, (and this is my understanding for the 8 stitches used for this pattern) four stitches knitted in front and four in the back, like your typical cable. but when i started and got to the part, found out that it wasn’t so simple. It’s the start that’s got me puzzled. do i purl 2 stitches on to a cable needle? how should i start?

Okay, that’s not a cable pattern, it makes an elongated cross stitch. Just do exactly as it says, it makes more sense when you’re working the sts.
For the p4s, instead of just moving the yarn around the needle once every stitch, wrap it twice. Then on the next row, slip each st to the R needle, but drop off the extra wraps, making them longer. Then pass the first 2 sts back to the left needle over the other 2, (like when you BO) then the next set of 2 , and knit the sts in their new order.
On the right needle, they were 4, 3, 2, 1, move sts 2 and 1 over the top of 3 and 4 and the new order on the L needle will be 1, 2, 4, 3.
oh i see, in the 3rd row, with it mentions
“P2, sl 4 WYIB, dropping extra 4 wraps; return these 4 sts to LH needle, pass the last 2 sts slipped over the first 2 and k them in this crossed position, p2.”
the cabling is actually done in this one.
is that right?
It’s not really cabling. You’re changing the position of the elongated sts as Sue describes so that you work the second 2 sts before the firse 2sts.
That’s the row, but it’s not a cable like where you put sts on another needle and hold in front or back of the other stitches. It looks like the pictures in this pattern, they’re just crossed over each other, kind of woven,not in back or front.
