Ribbing Trouble

Hi Amy and all,
i’m doing ribbing and have been doing it since last night just to get the right ‘ribbing’ shape…i’m doing the procedures correctly and i’ve just done amy’s ribbing procedures, too…the result?..it’s a mess…the shape is not high-low-high-low shape…the shape is like polkadot here, polkadot there…it’s looked like more a knot-spread than a ribbing…

i thought it’s like knit, purl, knit, purl plus moving the yarn forward, backward, etc…and when to get to the row 2, i only have to adjust the first row…if it was started with knit, then i’ll purl…well, anyway, girls…i did both of knit-knit and knit-purl, the result was seemed still the knot-spread…

it’s sooo embarassing so i’m hesitate to give you the picture of those knots…

is ribbing not looked good on thicker yarn?
i’m not using yarn like amy’s…

please help…any tips , suggestions, or anything?
picture sample of using thicker yarn maybe?anything, girls…i need help here…

Hi there,

It’s not the yarn because i’m knitting a jumper in chunky at the moment and the ribbing is fine.

Dee.

Just a thought. Are you turning your work thus making bobles.
Dee

exactly, cocoa…that’s what i meant…

i’m trying to not count like 2 knit, 2 purl…all i do just making adjustment to the lower row i’ve made…it’s better than counting…but i still feel the shape is not too coming out…it’s seen, yes…but i think it’s not neat…

i wish, there’s a very detail picture about this ribbing result…especially with thicker yarn…

thanks cocoa, at least, i knew now that yarn is not the problem…

this is my new ribbing…
is this what suppose to be looked like?
well, may be the picture too blurred…but i only have this cell-camera to use…but i hope you can get the big picture of what i’ve done so far…

i think i make it too tigh…or the stick is too small for the yarn…
i use 4.5 for thicker yarn (if not the thickest)

Is it just me, or is your ribbing going sideways? If you have 6sts you would K2,P2 or whatever you want K1,P1 for example. It looks like you knitted two rows then Purled two rows. Your ribbing is running horizontal instead of vertical. Now, I only started knitting again. I had a 20yr break so maybe I am just looking at it all wrong. :??

It looks like lots of garter rows and then ribbing. I suspect it’s the thickness of the yarn or tightness of the knitting that’s keeping the ribbing flatter than you expect.

It looks like on that top part you did k2, p2 the way you were supposed to.

You are right Ingrid, I was looking at the garter and thinking that was her ribbing. I thought her ribbing looked like a pattern. I think I will just stick to asking questions and not answering them. :teehee:

hi,

On the chunky yarn it says use needle size 5.5/6.5mm
US = 9/10.5

It’s hard to tell by the picture but Is your work is raise like a 3d effect. If so
make sure the yarn is behind your work (english style) on the knit.st & towards you at the front and on the purl.st. It can be difficult to get the same tension with the knits.st and purls stitches.

However it doesn’t look that bad ,if you was using boucle it would be the design of the wool an interesting effect:) wink

Dee.

I can’t see from the picture because it’s kinda small, but if you’re having a polka-dot effect, are you sure you are knitting the knit stitches and purling the purl stitches? Saying polka-dot effect makes me think you might accidentally be doing seed stitch. This could happen if, for example, you were doing a 1x1 ribbing on an odd number, and so for the right side you start with a knit stitch and end with a knit stitch, but it would mean that on the wrong side you’d have to start with a purl stitch and end with a purl stitch. If you started and ended with a knit stitch on the wrong side like you did on the right side (and it was an odd number of sts), you’d get seed stitch instead.

well, actually, i’m trying to make scarf…
for some first rows, i made knitting (ordinary knit, i mean)…
then, i do one purl (or two) then back to knit again then i start ribbing…

my ribbing is …how to say this…it will be a long ribbing as same as the length of the scarf…do you call it horizontal or vertical ribbing?..

yes, i used to think the same as ingrid’s…i think it’s the thickness of the yarn or i pull the yarn to tight…do you have tips for this. i used local yarn and in indonesia, knitting is definitely rare, so this local yarn doesn’t have any clue of what number of stick i should use. imported yarn does have.

candy, you are right about 2k 2p…but precisely, i’m doing 2k 2p per row…

ow, if you see the ribbing video by amy…my yarn is like minimum twice thicker than amy’s and my stik is 4,5… hihihi…it doesn’t suit each other, does it?..i just thought using this number for that thick yarn would result in a solid and neat knit and tight…

i have imported yarn and use it with my 4,5 stick (i should use 4 but i bought 4,5. just want to put it in the middle between 4 and 5…haha) and the result is it’s not too tight and neat…and also, not looked like a solid knit.

just courious…for beginner like me…should i use wood or metal stick?..

thank you friends for the replies…

For very thick yarn, I think you’ll be happier with the results using a 7 or 8 mm needle (stick). It will feel softer and springier. Your ribbing will have space to move rather than lay flat.

Metal or wooden is up to you. I like metal because I like the needles to be slippery. Other people like wood because it feels like they have more control over the stitches.

Hang in there, it’s all learning experience, whatever you do.
