I’m knitting the Homespun Vest from Lion Brand. The next part that I’m beginning to knit is the right front where it states to "work as for Left Front, rev. shaping. How exactly is this done–this confuses me. On the Left Front, the pattern states that Row 1 (WS) k4,purl. Row 2 (RS) knit. Now, does this mean that I start on the RS and knit, and row 2 is the wrong side where you k4, purl? Can someone explain this to me?

When it says to ‘reverse shaping’ patterns are generally referring to the places in the pattern where there are increases or decreases. So if you’re making one side of the front of the vest and you decrease for waist shaping, for example – if you do it at the beginning of right side rows for one of the front pieces, to reverse shaping you would have to decrease at the end of right side rows for it to match. That’s just an example but hopefully you know what I mean and can translate it to your pattern.

No, on R 1 you would purl, then k4; and on R 2, knit across.

when i reverse shaping, a lot of the patterns i have simply say to swap knit for purls, and purls for knit, so where your row 1 is a knit row, they would become p4, knit and row 2 would be purl… just follow the shaping as is you only swap the stitches, if you get me.
LEFT FRONT
With smaller needles, cast on 31 (35, 39, 42) sts. Knit 6 rows. Change to larger needles. Row 1 (WS) K 4, purl. Row 2 Knit Rep Rows 1-2 until piece measures 11 (10½, 12, 11 ½)" from beg, ending after a RS row.
This is the pattern you are asking about
Row 1- (WS) K4, then Purl to end of row
Row 2-Knit the whole row-Then repeat rows 1 & 2 again till piece measures the right amount of inches for your size
So just keep doing row1

This is actually the part that you need to do reverse shaping on----

Yes, this is the pattern. I’ve done the right front, now do I continue to do reverse shaping, or is the right front all that I need to worry about, since the pattern states to “work right front as for left front, rev. shaping”. So, I don’t need to reverse anything else like the armhole borders,shaping of armholes neck border, etc? Sorry to be such a bother, but, this, to me, is confusing. I’m sure it’s simple, but want to make sure I’m doing this correctly.

Oh yes, you do have to reverse the shaping for the armholes. Here’s how:
Shape Armhole:
Row 1 (RS) Bind off 3 sts, k to end.
Row 2 K 4, purl to last 5 sts, k 5.
Row 3 K 4, ssk, knit to end. Rep Rows 2-3 for 3 (4, 5,6) times more. Cont in pat on rem 24 (27, 30, 32) sts until piece measures 16½ (16½, 18½, 18½)" from beg, ending after a RS row.
R 1 - Knit to the end. (you can’t BO at the end of the row, you have to do it at the beginning of the next row).
R2 - BO 3, k2, purll to last 4 sts, k 4
R 3 - K to last 4 sts, k2tog, k 2
Repeat rows 2-3 (only don’t BO off when you repeat R 2).
Hope that helped. Once you start working on it and figure out which is your neck edge and which is your armhole edge, it will be easier to know what to do to match the L side.

Ok, I’ve down to shaping the neck. The pattern states:
(WS) Bind off 7sts,k3,purl to last 4 sts, k4
row 2: knit to last 6 sts, k2tog,k4
row 3: knit 4, purl to last 4 sts. Rep rows 2-3 3 more times. Cont. in pat on rem 13 sts til piece measures 20" from beg ending with a WS row.
Now, how do I reverse this section?

I’m knitting the Homespun Vest from Lion Brand, and I’m ready to shape the neck–you helped me so much yesterday. I don’t have any problem with reversing plain knitting, I just don’t get the decreases. This is a wonderful forum, and without it, I would have given up on this vest. It’s simple til you get to this part (at least for me). I read that when you reverse, you just read each row backwards. But, since you can’t bind off at the begiinning of a row, I get stumped here. Also, I don’t know how to post a link to the pattern.

I found it. No you can’t BO at the end of a row, always on the beginning. So when reversing, you would BO at the beginning of the next row. It doesn’t matter that it’s off one row; if you’re doing the pattern at the same gauge, it’s less than ¼ inch difference. You have to keep the garter stitch edge the same as the other side, and BO and decrease at the neck edge.
