If it’s a casual type place and your tablemates don’t mind, I say go for it! The strangest place I’ve KIP so far is waiting for my pizza at the Neguac, NB Greco, and no one seemed to have a problem with it.
Well, my dh doesn’t like it. I was trying to finish a scarf for my mom and I brought my knitting with me to a Mexican Restaraunt (I always air out my projects very well before gifting, so food smells aren’t a factor).
I only knitted while waiting for the food to appear (this particlar restaraunt makes everything from scratch, so it can be a long wait on days when they are busy). I put it down when they brought out the chips and salsa…
And do you know, 4 months later, I STILL hear about it. Of course, he doesn’t get the whole knitting thing, period, so I can’t really be surprised by this.

I think if you’re going out to eat by yourself, or a group of knitting friends, go for it. xxx Personally, I wouldn’t knit if I was going out to eat with my husband because I want to spend time with him. If we went out to eat and my husband started reading a magazine or something, I’d feel bad. :pout: I guess it’s probably because both of us work all day and don’t really get to go out together much (besides grocery shopping, lol), so when we do, I like it to be special–just the two of us; my knitting can wait.
But if I was going out to lunch by myself, you can bet I’m bringing my needles.
I knit everywhere! if I could knit in the bathtub I would. I get som many warm smiles from people (I mean really who doesn’t like to see the sight of someone knitting?) and what HamaLee said, its al about consideration. Whatever happened to consideration? When I was a kid having consideration for others was one of the biggest lessons to be learned. in school, with you r parents, at camp, girl scouts, they were always teaching us about the bigger picture. Now it seems no one cares about that. Now we’re all about making money or getting power. In an atmosphere like that then I guess it would be confusing about how we interact with one another.
I would totally knit while waiting for food. I’d knit (if I could remember to bring my knitting) anywhere.
I knit everywhere I can. I specifically keep a small project on needles just for KIP.
I could not knit in a restaurant, because I am a spiller. I just know that I would spill something at some point.
But that is the only reason why I wouldn’t.
Me too! Except for me “at some point” would be more like “as soon as I sat down”
…Maybe I should knit myself an all-growns-up bib :teehee:
Quoting Hamalee . …knitting in a restaurant waiting for a table? Way cool, go for it. Waiting for your food while at the table? I’d say go for it AS LONG AS YOUR DINNER COMPANY IS COOL WITH IT.
I added the capital letters here for emphasis.
And my added two cents:
I think the key to public knitting is just making sure that it does not interfere with anyone else.
It’s totally ok (I think) to knit while waiting for food. The smell part hits home with me though.
These are such intersting answers. Like Kelly mentioning those couples who don’t talk to each other, yeah man, I’ve watched them for years and thanked god we (the DH and I) haven’t graduated to that point.
The writing class: well, there’s just weird writers (or not-really-writers) in these workshops/classes. I had one like that but she wasn’t knitting. She never. ever shared her work, she never commented, she just stared at you while you read your work. Felt like a bug under a microscope.
If I were an actor and those girls were doing that I’d be very tempted to do what Kathryn Hepburn did when a man put his feet up on the stage to stretch out: “Excuse me Sir! I’m ACTING HERE!”
:happydance:
Just think about when people were smoking while waiting for their food! (or are they still somewhere out there?)
I knit everywhere myself as well! I dont care if it bothers anyone - I can’t imagine it does though. Every time I knit while waiting to eat - it strikes up a conversation with SOMEONE - whether it be the waitress, the manager, or someone sitting near by. It’s not like we’re making noise or bothering anyone. It makes the time go by fast too waiting! I don’t hardly ever leave the house without my knitting bag! I’d feel lost!
I crochet and knit everywhere. I wouldn’t while I was eating no… just common sense, but waiting on food or waiting for others to finish then yeah… why not? There are places that are inappropriate yes, but just a casual lunch then I see no problem on this at all
Sure why not. I can knit and still hold on a conversation. xxx
