Reducing a pattern HELP

Hi everyone, I want to make a baby sweater for a doll that can wear large preemie sizes (a lee middleton toddler doll). The pattern calls for using DK 100g balls only 1 is needed and a size 6 needle. I was using
caron sport weight yarn and I can tell it’s going to turn out way to big. Can I make it smaller by using smaller needles or what, this is such a cute sweater I really want to make it.

Since its for a doll, and size isn’t as important, yes, you can reduce the size by using smaller needles. See what your gauge is on a smaller needle, divide that per inch number into the number of st of the pattern, and you’ll be able to get an idea of how many inches it will be.
