A while back I downloaded a pattern using this yarn and US size 10 needles, but I recently read that the yarn uses US size 15 needles. The pattern is for a pair of slippers - would this be why the needle size is different?

It could be. Generally you want slippers knit tighter so they are warmer and sturdier. Their is less stretching of the fabric, too.
I agree with Jan. I used WoolEase Thick and Quick and size 8 needles. My hands hated it, my feet love the slippers. What pattern are you using?
