Recommend a stitch/pattern for a towel, please?

I’m knitting a washcloth and towel set (and hopefully a sachet as well) for my mom, using Bernat Cottontots.

The washcloth I’m doing as a mitered square, in pink and yellow (she likes those colors)…

I would like to do a matching hand towel, but I’m not sure what sort of stitch pattern to use (if that’s the right way to phrase it). I saw this pattern for a guest towel, but I have tried the mock cable thing a few times and can’t get it to work.

And, I’d really like to try something new and exciting for the towel, after doing all of this garter stitch for the washcloth!

But, I want it to look ok with the washcloth too, kwim?

Any recommendations? I really think the dragon scale pattern is neat looking, but not sure that would be advisable here… I want it to look ok with the garter stitch washcloth, be able to wash and wear well, and I don’t want my mom to have to do anything other than wash and dry it.

Any suggestions? I guess if I can’t find anything that will work, I could try the mock cable thing again and post here for advice. I have tried that a few times now and it just never looks like the pictures though.

I agree that the dragon scale pattern probably wouldn’t be best for a functional towel. Have look through:

See if you like any of those st patterns.

Also, one note on the “Guest Towel” pattern: I would ignore the “Place right hand needle between two knit stitches on the left needle as if to knit” instructions of the MoC. It doesn’t make any sense. I would just knit the second st on the LN (do not slide that st off yet); knit the first st on the LN then slide both sts off. You’re basically twisting those two sts. The hoody that I’m working on now has the same instruction, but without the “Place right hand needle between two knit stitches on the left needle as if to knit” indication.

Hope that help!

Thanks for the link!!! After hemming and hawing for hours and hours (my trademark, I can never decide for sure what I want to do), I think I’m going to use the Little Pyramids pattern. It’s supposed to lay flat and it will have a nice texture.

Thanks again!

HERE’S another good one.

Also, HERE. Actually, this one may work out nice…alot of these are garter st with an animal, a letter, or other themed item in the middle! They’d match a washcloth perfectly if incorporated into a towel!
