I just started Yarnspirations Free Bernat Cable Knit Throw and am confused. It says proceed in Cable Pattern (which is an 8 row pattern) but writes out 1st row and 2nd row and these two rows form pattern and to continue in pattern. How is this possible - I know I’m missing something but just can’t wrap my head around it. Thanks!
Hello
Rows 1 and 2 show what comes either side of each cable pattern. There is a border then cable a, then a separating section between cable a and b, then cable b, then another separating section, and so on until the last 17 sts, then cable a again and finally a border.
Rows 1 and 2 will repeat over and over, they tell you whether to knit or purl for the borders and separating sections. Where these rows say “work 1st row of cable panel a” you will change this to the subsequent rows of cable patterns
Row 1 cables row 1
Row 2 cables row 2
Row 1 cables row 3
Row 2 cables row 4
Row 1 cables row 5
Row 2 cables row 6
Row 1 cables row 7
Row 2 cables row 8
Row 1 cables row 1 (your cable repeat)
Personally I would place markers on the needle to show where cable a starts and ends, again with b, again with the following cables. The smaller spaces between the cable panels will be clear and it will help keep everything in line. Once you get going you’ll see the borders and separating sections just repeat and stay in line. You might even want to remove the markers after a while as the alignment will become obvious by looking at the knitting.
The set up rows are often the hardest bit. Counting stitches and placing markers before you work the row should help.
I hope this helps.
That absolutely makes sense - thank you. I will definitely use markers to start. Appreciate your input!
Glad to be of use.
Maybe post some progress pics when you get going, it’s always lovely to see what’s on the needles. I’m a bit envious of blanket knitters as I can’t manage the weight myself so I will admire your work.
I found that markers - as well as writing the pattern out on index cards really helped as I was flipping pages back and forth!
Anyway I’ve completed one section of the pattern here. It’s a slow knit, but I’m not in any hurry!
That was very quick progress and looking good!
It’s going to be a beautiful throw
That looks great! Is the yarn one of those woven tube types, a blown yarn maybe? It looks lovely whatever it is.
Flipping pages is definitely not something I’d enjoy. I like to photocopy or print or hand draw a chart to have it easily readable.
I’ve done that before. One row per index card. Finish row, put card in the back, work next card. Put them together with a paper clip when I set the project aside. Easy to find where you’re working when you pick it back up.
Not much progress after I went back to work this week and now I’m in a pickle. I think I’m at the beginning of the 8 row cable pattern but I’m not sure. (Cat problems lol). I put a lifeline in and I know I’m ready to start a RS row. I’m having trouble reading the stitches with the cabling. Any suggestions?
It looks like the braid on the right is about to cross over the center sts:
This video may help (or it may not) with determining the cable cross on the left although it looks like the two charts are in sync.
In future you can put a marker or thread into the stockinette ridge row in the middle every time you make the cable cross. That way you have an easy stitch column to count rows between cable crosses. Mark the cross 2-3 times and then just keep moving an old thread up to mark the most recent cross.
Just make sure the cables are crossing in the correct direction as you go.
