I have tried to figure this pattern out for several years. I’ve never knitted a sweater and the marker placement with the pattern for the raglan sleeves has me completely confused.
I’m attaching the portion of the pattern for the marker placement and I’m hoping someone can lend a hand. I’m sure it’s something simple but I sure can’t figure it out. The sweater is the Kelly Sweater by Anita Brathetland.
Thank you!

Hello
Lovely choice of sweater, the rib detail is very attractive.
You will manage to knit this sweater, there is so much help here and a friendly forum, just ask whenever you get stuck (I do).
I’m not sure which size you’re making, you might circle or highlight your size through the pattern so you can keep track more easily.
Perhaps the confusion on these markers is where they start.
The beginning of the round is mid back.
The first number of stitches (9 for your size) is half of the back, the left half as you would wear the sweater, then a marker, then a group of 9 stitches which will be where you rib and make the increases that are detailed in the following round, this is the back left of the sweater.
Then there are 9 stitches for the left sleeve.
9 stitches for the front left ribbing and increases.
A number of stitches for the front of the sweater (17 for your size)
9 stitches for the front right ribbing and increases.
9 stitches for the right sleeve
9 stitches for the back right ribbing and increases
Finally a number of stitches (8 for your size) to complete the back and the round.
Remember half the back came at the beginning of the round, the number of stitches first marked off plus the number at the end of the round make the whole of the stockinette back panel (9+8=17), and this is equal to the number of stitches on the stockinette front panel (17 sts).
If it was me I’d have a marker at the beginning of the round and would jot down what colour it is. Then I’d use a different colour marker to put before and after the 4 rib sections and I might even colour code them
eg. inc Right is Red, inc Left is Lilac
If I was very confused I’d put a removable stitch marker, safety pin, or a thread attached to one of the stitches (not on the needle) on each panel that is a sleeve to remind me this section is the sleeve. I’ve even been know to write myself a note and attach it to a removable marker to tell me which bit it is.
Whatever works.
Once you get going on this it will get easier. When the rib and stockinette sections are started it will be much easier to see what’s what.
Does this help?
If it’s not enough or unclear just say and someone will jump in to help.
Hello! Thank you! You have been a great help. I am knitting a small with 88 cast on stitches and I just could not get the numbers for maker stitches to make sense. I’m going to back up and try again with your helpful post. I really appreciate this. The sweater is quite pretty with double yarn in a teal.
Again, thank you so much!
You’re welcome.
I have edited my previous post to put in the stitch number for the size you are making which may help as you work through.
Putting the markers in place and counting the stitches before you start the round may help, or at least it is what I would do, and the sections add up to the 88 cast on.
It will get easier once this tricky bit is done and we are here for any other tricky bits you come across too.
Good morning,
Thank you! You’ve helped me so much with this pattern and inspired me to keep working at it. Just what I needed. After a year of knitting this pattern, unknitting, reknitting, now with your help, I’m sure I can finish. ;-).
Thank you again,
Kathy
