When reading a chart, do you purl left to right and knit right to left? or is it the other way around?
Reading a chart
I’m not sure I understand the question. But when I read a chart I read it starting on whichever side the number is on. So if the the number for a row is on the left hand side of the chart, I read (and knit it) from left to right. Conversely, if the number of the row is on the right hand side of the chart, I read (and knit it) from right to left.
Hope that helps… :??
Hmm. since I turn my work, I always knit and purl from right to left (working from the left needle to the right needle). I read charts, though, usually from right to left as that is how I am knitting. Since I am turning my work, it will still be read from right to left. Make sense?
If you have an intarsia chart, and read the first row right to left, you have to read the next row left to right, since you’re on the back of the work and if you read it right to left, it will be backwards.
If you’re knitting, the chart is right to left. If you’re purling the chart is left to right.
Ingrid, PLEASE correct me if I’m wrong… but when I look at the chart {I’m actually doing a charted sweater!!!}, I see it as being the right side facing me, starting at the bottom and working my way up. That’s how I always did filet crochet, so it’s easy for me to “think backwards” when looking at a chart and doing a WS row.
That’s exactly it. When you’re looking at a chart, you’re looking at how the front of your sweater, or whatever, is supposed to look.
Great! The chart I was following was just a simple relief pattern with some c1f and c1b to outline the areas. I was able figure it out on my own what I was doing after a few rows. The problem is that the picture of the sweater with the pattern is done in a dark ombre, and you can’t pick out the “design” at all. I wasn’t sure if I was actually following the pattern, or making my own design element!
