I’m learning to double knit, and I’m currently working on a scarf. My question might be a bit silly, but…
Are the edges of the scarf supposed to be open, so that the two layers of yarn can be separated when I poke my hand through the middle? Is there any way to close the edges up?
Mmm, i don’t think the edges should be open.
personally i’m not familiar at all with that technique, but i’ve already seen it in books, and even though they’re open when knitting, there must be a way to close them afterwards
Other wise you end up having a giant knitted headband :pout:
Good luck to you

Yetish…let’s start with your technique…when you were knitting with the double threads of yarn…you did have two in your hand at once didn’t you? It is JUST the same as ordinary knitting except you have TWO yarns being knitted at once. You cast on with the two yarns at once. You have two balls and you have two lengths of yarn in your yarn and are winding two yarns around the needle at the same time.
Suasa P, double knitting isn’t the same as knitting with two strands of yarn. You use 2 different yarns, but not as one. Amy has a video on her CDs.
I haven’t tried it yet, but according to the pattern Amy uses, you need to knit the 2 yarns together for the first stitch. That would hold the 2 layers together.
There’s 2 kinds of double knitting, one where you knit with different colors to knit a picture or, one where you produce a double layered piece with stockinette on both sides (which can also use 2 colors so there’s a different color on each side. I think yetish may be doing the double layer kind, where you k1, sl 1 with yarn in front, k1 etc on both front and back. The ends and the edges should be closed, not open, but the top edge that you’re still working on is open like a tube. It will close up when you BO.
