Does aran weight mean the same as worsted weight? Is “aran” a British term? (I’m in the USA - Florida). Someone is offering me pattern advice and I’m confused about the terminology.

An Aran yarn is usually a heavy worsted weight. You really have to go by the gauge. Worsted can often be used in place of Aran, but some worsteds are a bit thinner than others.
