I have a stupid question. :teehee: What is the difference between sock yarn, fingering weight yarn, and lace weight yarn? Is there a difference? I’ve looked at them online and they all kind of look the same. Without being able to touch them or see them in person it’s kind of hard to tell, and I haven’t really found anything helpful online, either.
I really want to make the Jeanie wrap from the Winter 2007 issue of Knitty, but the yarn called for is a little out of my price range right now. I’ve found several really pretty (and affordable) yarns out there, but I’m not quite sure what I can substitute and what I can’t. If anybody has any insight, I would be really grateful.
It says sock yarn, but the gauge is closer to lace weight based on guide above. Shawls aren’t critical though so as long as you get a fabric you like that’s all that matters. I’d say either fingering or lace weight would be fine.
Lace weight isn’t going to give you the same result for this shawl. They want true sock yarn; the yarn they suggest is 450 yds for 4 oz. (And it requires 3 of those skeins.) I’d use a yarn where you get about 450 yds for 4 oz, or about 400 yds for 3.5 oz/100g. If you find something for say, 380 yds per 100g, that’s okay, just make sure you get about 1350 yds all together. But lace weight can be 800 yds per 100g, and that’s just too fine too hold the stitch.
Thanks for the responses. Knit Picks may have just provided the answer to my search with this. $20 a hank is a lot, but I might just be able to afford $10. :teehee:
