Question about feather and fan

Hi!

Thanks to you all, I just finished the Old Shale scarf and it turned out great!

I’d like to make a “real” one this time, as I used just left over yarn and it’s pretty short. I’d like it to be more narrow this time and I’m wondering if there’s a rule about the pattern repeat in Old Shale. It seems like it’s multiples of six but I’ve never altered a stitch pattern before and thought maybe someone here could help me. Here is a link to the Ravelry pattern:

I think it’s just feather and fan. I’d like it about 1/3 thinner. How many sts would I start with? How would row 3 go? Thanks!!!

*(K2tog) 3 times, (YO, K1) 6 times, (K2tog) 3 times;

I see this as being the repeat section, so you’d want to cast on multiples of 18.

It’s multiples of 18, plus whatever extra you want for edge sts, if any.

But if I want it without a border, like the other one in the pic, then just multiples of 18? This should be simple but it just isn’t penetrating my brain. I blame it on my kids, they are sucking the intelligence right out of me!

Right, for no edge border, just multiple of 18.

A very common feather and fan situation generally goes like this:

cast on 36 sts.
Row 1: K2 tog (3 times), YO K1 (6 times), K2 tog (6 times), YO K1 (6 times), K2 tog (3 times).
Row 2: K.
Row 3: K.
Row 4: P.

Yep, that’s the 18 st repeat done twice. Usually the end of the repeat is the k2tog 3 times - then you’d start from the beginning to repeat, which effectively ends up with k2tog 6 times in the middle. By using an 18 st repeat you can repeat them 3 or 5 times instead of having a 2 or 4 pattern repeat.

OK! I’m going to cast on today! Thanks for all the help!! :heart:
