Question about creating a swatch "in pattern"...

Hi everyone!

I’ve been knitting for a few years now and it was only recently that I became serious about gauge and swatching. I understand how to create a swatch in stockinette, but recently I came across this:

“12 sts and 13 rows= 4 in. worked in pattern.”

My question is, when I make a swatch worked in the pattern, how do I then measure it to make sure I have the measurements right? Do I just lay the ruler down over the pattern and measure? Do I count each and every little stitch like I would for a stockinette swatch?

Thank you in advance!

Emily

Welcome to KH!
It can be a little bit of an estimate when you measure a gauge swatch in pattern. I usually mark off the correct number of sts with thread or pins while the swatch is still on the needles. Then you can bind off and wash if that’s what you usually do and measure.

Toward the end of this video is a section on pattern swatches.
