Question about baby blanket pattern on Knitty Gritty

I think the embossing technique in this pattern is really cool. I wanted to ask those who have done a chart like this before if they have any tips for someone new to these charts. Also, I may want to try altering the design of the blanket by using only one color and making a different shape than a heart. Anyone know of some good websites that have these charts or tips to creating my own. I’m pretty new so I don’ t want to got to crazy but it doesn’t look too bad. Think I’ll try it with a washcloth first to be sure I know what I’m doing first. Here’s the link to the project. Thanks!

Charts are easy. Just read the right side from right to left and on the back from left to right.

Thanks Ingrid! I just checked out this site and already know what I want to do! I’m going to make an alphabet blanket with the squares. I guess I’ll make the first and last square blank so there are an even number of squares (does this make sense?). There is a sample of one that someone make in the gallery that is really cute! the only thing I probably won’t do is the border around each square unless I have to. too much extra work. It is for a very good friend who is expecting in Sept. I also think that instead of using baby colors I’m going to use bright primary colors so that he or she may use it over the years more. I think it will be very cute! Now I just have to figure out how much yarn I will need. :XX: :thumbsup:

Ok,t I have a really silly question about doing these squares. I am about 1/2 through my first square. Is the “wrong” side supposed to look like the “right” side but opposite? In other words, the stuff that is raised on one side would be flat on the other (hope this makes sense)? I’m worried I’m not doing it right because it looks a little odd. Maybe I’ll just keep going and see what it looks like when I’m done. I am glad I did a test square first. I am using some yarn I had leftover to see how big it would be (woolease) and after doing the math I realized it would be huge for a baby. Think I better look for thinner yarn. :XX:

It looks like you should have a letter of garter stitch set on a background of stockinette stitch. On the front, the letter should stand out against the v’s of the background, but on the back I imagine it would be less obvious, but still seeable.
