Q about patterns, turning work, and converting

Hi. I’m more or less self-taught, and there’s something I’ve never really understood. And I don’t know anyone local to ask.

I prefer never to turn my work. I can K and P and do cables and whatnot, but it’s always seemed much faster to me not to turn the whole thing back and forth all the time. I mean that I cast on to the right hand needle, knit the first row off to the left, then knit the next row back onto the right. Is this unusual? I think it must be, because it seems that all patterns are written with the intent that you’ll turn the work at the end of every row.

Is it ok to convert patterns to the way I knit, switching K and P and stitch numbers? I do this already, but I’m wondering if there’s some reason I should be knitting and turning. Anything I should know?

You might be what is called a combination knitter (?). If it works for you, then go for it.
