Hey everyone! I have a question on how to do this:
how to increase 1 at each end of a PURL row? (and keep it symmetrical)
I looked at the increases in the Glossary on here, but can’t do that (right?) on the first purl st of the row. Help!
Also, on the knit rows, I’ve been increasing using K1fb - is this ok?
I’m doing Bertie Bear from The Knitted Teddy Bear by Sandra Polley.
When it say ‘each end’ I take that to mean at both the beginning and end of each row, in other words to increase at both edges. If it said ‘at the end of each purl row’ I would take that as increasing only at the end of the purl rows. I hope I’m right on that, check your stitch numbers to make sure.
You can just do a purl into the front and back to increase on a purl row, and I’d do it one stitch in from the edge. So purl 1, pfb, purl to the last 2 stitches, pfb and end with p1.
Does that help?
Hi Knitqueen! Thanks for your reply!
It looks like it’s at the beginning and end of each row, here’s the directions (and they give the increased by two/row stitch count):
Inc1 st at each end of row and following alt row (13 sts - which is increased by 4 over 2 rows)
I guess I just really am guessing at how to do a purl through the back loop part - I know I’ll be coming from behind the left needle, and then do I come f/below the st on the left needle w/the right needle, looping and pulling through? It just seems so awkward.
I wish I could see a video of this. :??
There’s a video for pfb (bar increase) in the Increases section…

Thanks suzeeq - that was exactly what I needed!! However, I went ahead and tried it out just like the video said before I got your post (and after a few wrong turns), and it seemed to not look ‘too wrong’
so I kept on doing it.
At least now I know where all the different increases and decreases are now! :cheering: Thanks again!
