Pullover: Trouble with yarn and gauge

WARNING: UK KNITTER!!

I am an intermediate knitter and have made several hats, scarves and bags, so now I want to try a sweater.

However, the yarn the pattern calls for yarn that has been discontinued (Classic Elite Duchess) and I am confused about how to choose yarns according to the gauge in the pattern. I can’t find any wools with the same gauge on the label. They either have a different number of stitches or row, or a completely different needle size!!

It reads like this in the pattern:

Gauge: 14sts and 25 rows to 4" over Broken Rib stitch on 6.5mm needles, or size needed to obtain gauge.

If anyone could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful. And also if anyone can suggest a UK yarn to use for this pattern that would be great!!!:stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks in advance!:knitting: :knitting: :knitting: :knitting: :knitting: :knitting:

P.S This pattern is from the ‘Chicks with Sticks: Guide to Knitting’.

According to the Ravelry yarn database, that’s a Bulky weight, you might call it chunky over there. Substitute another yarn that has a similar gauge on its label - 14 sts/4" with a 6 to 8mm needle. Use the label gauge to substitute, it classifies yarn into a weight range and patterns might use a different needle for design purposes.

Welcome to Knitting Help. We do speak different Englishes in the U.S. (where I and many other here are) and the UK but we usually manage to communicate in spite of it. I love that knitters all over the world have things in common and we learn from each other.

Do you have a yarn stash? You could play around with needle sizes with yarn you already have and see how close you are to gauge. From that you would have a better idea of what yarn to look for.

:grphug: Yay! Now I can choose yarn and get started.

Your reply was very helpful, thank you so much!
