Puff Sts? Dish cloth pattern help!

I am working on another dish cloth  This one here:

I am already lost on Row 1!!! It says everything is in multiples of 6 stiches + 2, but I am counting 9 stiches + 2. So, that leaves me with 3 stiches missing if I cast on the 34 stiches and use up 8 total for the borders, +2 for those stiches in each row.

And what in the heck is a puff st??? Is that were I am going wrong??

So, back to row 1, here is the instructions:
P2, *(k1, p1) twice in next st forming 4 puff sts), p2, k1, p2; rep from *.

So I did this exactly: p2, then repeat this pattern: k1, p1, k1, p1, p2, k1, p2. I am wondering if the twice in next st forming 4 puff sts part is what I goofing up and just ignoring something??

Anyone have any insight?

That’s where you’re going wrong.

P2, then k1, p1, k1, p1 IN THE SAME ST, which means you don’t slide off after the first k1.

So, k1, don’t slide it off,
move the yarn forward and p into the same st, don’t slide it off,
put the yarn in back, k 1, don’t slide it off,
put the yarn in front, p1
THEN slide the whole mess off. Whew.

I’ve never heard of a puff st either. It kind of sounds like the first row of a bobble. On a bobble you would purl these together later, but I don’t want to confuse you!

oh! I see. Thanks Ingrid!!!

I am still trying to figure out how to do this, even though it seems easy enough! I gave it try and ended up with like 4 more loops on my right-side needle. ugh!! :frog:

Since you’re putting four stitches into one, you will end up with 4 on your right needle.

oh! So, maybe I am doing it right after all. I guess things will fall into place as I move on the next rows

Thanks! :XX:

I just took a look at the washcloth (about time, huh) and you’re essentially making bobbles. You’ll find that later on you bring these extra stitches back together into one stitch. They call it puff. Maybe it sounds softer for a washcloth?
