Provisional cast on with DPNs

I’m making the Tooth Fairy Pillow and I’m having trouble with how to work in the round with DPNs with the provisional cast on.

I’ve restarted about 6 times already, and haven’t been able to finish more than 1 round! UGH!! I often (but not always) transfer the first and last sts of the cast on (first st on last dpn, last st onto first dpn). Even if I don’t do this, I usually have only a minimal gap.

Can I do this with the provisional cast on? I’m not sure, since I will be undoing it later. If not, any tips on how to NOT have a 2 inch gap? No matter what I’ve tried so far (without switching the sts) I have this huge gap that no amount of tightening seems to help.

Since the provisional will be taken out later, just tighten it as well as you can, then make sure the 1st round is snugged up. That’s the one you’ll be knitting off from when you’re ready to do the crown, so the CO doesn’t need to be joined that tightly.

My first row is the one that I can’t get ‘snug’. I tightened it as much as I could, but when I came back around, there was at least an inch, if not more, of slack. My second row is just as loose, and will not tighten.

I’m going to try adding another DPN in another size. In the size I need, I only have a set of 4, so I’ll add one from a smaller size and see if that will help any.

In this case I’d probably just do a LTCO with some slippery waste yarn and CO one add’l st so that your join is just a matter of K2tog. I actually prefer that method of join to the st transfer. The tightness of the join isn’t that big a deal but make sure when you use your main body yarn the sts near the join are even.

BTW, do you have a circ (any length) in the recommended ndl sz? You could do Magic Loop perhaps. Might help with the slack.

try a different provisional cast on.

there are at least 3 style/methods for a provisional cast on using waste yarn? Are you using method 1? (its the least satisfactory in my opinion–its hard to get a nice smooth tight row 1

method 2 and 3 are better --even if they are less commonly promoted!

1–make crochet chain pick up stitches in back of loop
(i hate this one!)

2–use a crochet hook to cast right onto needle
(see how here.. cast on all the stitches to a single needle, Knit 1 row then join into round (it will be very easy to Duplicate stitche the seam closed

3–google Elizabeth Zimmerman’s (EZ’s) provisional cast on…
(also knit 1 row before joining into round.)

I was using #2. I finally got it and finished, but it has a nice ladder on the side

The ladders will even out with a little washing.
