Project Log Hints pls

First post so I’ll probably be spelling things out that have abbr. ha ha

ok, I’d love some hints on what works for you to keep a log of your FO. (hey I remembered one.)

Of course if I was on Ravelry there might be a place there, but until then … Do you use binder? file cards? excel?

What do you keep track of?
project, needle(s), y, pattern, date started/fininshed, where you got the y and $. Anything I’m missing?

Welcome to the forum!

I don’t keep track of anything. If I change a needle size, I write it on the pattern, if I remember, but other than that . It has presented a problem once in a while, but generally not.

That’s just me, though. I just want to knit. I don’t want to have to be organized about it. :teehee:

True dat!

I recently started keeping a knitting book. I write down things I think will be important, like when I started the project, what type of yarn I used, the colour and the dye lot (my cat steals my yarn labels!). I am knitting a hat for my BF and I have two stitch markers on my needles that are two different colours indicating two different things. I wrote down which colour means what just so I don’t forget. I like to keep a book because it’s all together. It’s probably not the bext system since I’ll have to flip through it to find anything, but so far it’s okay.

I hate when someone sez: “nice hat what y & size needles did you use?”. So, I was thinking a log might help. I do want to spend my time knitting but the memory. . .

I came up with an excel spread sheet with needles, who it was for, how long it took me to make, yarn used, where the pattern is from, and some other stuff. I found a card in the patternworks catalogue and was able to copy it and make it my own. HTH!

oh yeah, and I keep it with the pattern. I keep my patterns in a binder in plastic cover sheet (I spill a lot!) so I just throw the excel sheet in there!

Excellent hint to keep track of recipient - that way I don’t knit another red scarf for the s-in-l. tee hee

I don’t keep track of anything. Sometimes it’s a nice surprise when I find a book or yarn that I don’t recall purchasing. At this point, it will take me way too long to take inventory of my yarn, patterns, books, needles, etc.

I’m new to knitting relatively but I also like to scrapbook. I plan on knitting a book cover for a scrapbook (something I can add pages to) and keeping pix/labels/patterns in there and jotting in all the related info. All the bits of info that others have noted. I’m waiting for Ravelry too, but it’s still good to have something homemade I think. Plus, knit a book cover. Just sounds fun…scrap yarn, sampler for stitches, all that fun stuff!

I use thesepages…just print them off and add in what I need to… I keep them in a binder…I also have a notebook that I mark things in while I’m working on the project… I can’t write on a pattern :teehee:…if I’m working on charts I print off extras to color code the chart but I have to keep a clean chart for my pattern folders…:oo:

:notworthy: omg Thank you! Just what I need. So nice not to have to reinvent the wheel. Your and Kathryn Ivy’s sharing is appreciated. Oh happy day, joy, joy this may get me ready to log into Ravelry. Have I gushed enough?!

I keep mine in a Word file labeled “Knitting Journal.” (Easier for me than Excel, and prettier because I can play with the fonts and colors.) Each project gets a separate page and the categories are actually in table form (but the formatting did not come through cutting-and-pasting). Every now and then I print the pages and put them in a binder – so much for the paperless office.

I just have a spiral notebook that I have used. I write down the name of the pattern I am knitting / or knit. IF I use a different yarn and/or needles than suggested by the pattern I put that in there as well. Also often put in the yarn type, color and LOT# as I too often lose the label and wonder, “What was that yarn?” I don’t put in my start/finish dates yet though. THAT is TOO DEPRESSING for me to look at as I’m a slow knitter that tends to have multiple projects a knitting. I don’t want to see how long I’ve been working on something. LOL.

Dustinac, THANK YOU!!! I’m going to start using these instead of just my spiral notebook, or at least as a guide. Thanks. I like the “mods made” part. THAT is something I should be writing down as I do different things and would be nice to know what I did/didn’t do like pattern. DUH. WHY had I not thought of that? LOL Thanks for sharing.

 You guys are welcome…she had added some newer pages to since I had been there… :happydance:

I’ve tried a couple times over the years to start a knitting journal type record book. You’ll fine a few of these on my bookshelves at home - upon opening them you’ll only find partial info one 1 or 2 projects. I just can’t seem to stick with it. It boils down to, as others have said, I’d rather just knit.

And as to keeping any organized record of yarn stash, needles or books/patterns I own - well, if I did start to create such a list I’d never have time to knit again! I do have sock yarn in a separate bin with a list. At least this keeps me from buying too many of the same yarns again when there are so many out there I’d like to try. :knitting:

I wouldn’t be able to knit if I didn’t keep a journal :teehee:…If I know I didn’t record something then I can’t enjoy my knitting until I do…but this goes with house work and other things too… My husband will tell me it can wait just sit and knit…enjoy your weekend…but I can’t… little things drive me bonkers and I know if I don’t fix them or clean them well then my knitting won’t be relaxing to me… staying very organized lets me enjoy my knitting… and it really doesn’t cut into my time all that much…:teehee: Yes, I drive my dh crazy
