Problem

How can I prevent the “gap” from happening when transferring to opposite needle?

Welcome to KH!
I’ve seen this happen on the row after a thumb loop cast on. Is that where you are here, the first row after the cast on?
If so the best thing to do is not to use that cast on. It’s fine for a few sts but it doesn’t provide as stable an edge as a knit or cable cast on or a long tail cast on.

I agree with salmonmac. It’s probably your cast on. Backward loop is not a good one for more than a couple stitches. Try knitted cast on or long tail. My go to is long tail personally.
