Preventing holes when finishing heel section

So I am knitting the second sock after first part of pair was several yrs ago, so memory isn’t there. I followed written directions of set up row, transitioning from gsr heel to leg, using picking up bar (like make1) left an ugly hole. So I tinked back and followed tutorial that came with pattern which was totally different from written instructions. You were to pick up stitch below each side below this bar and it really looks good. Not sure why the directions were different. I’m not sure if it was added later. But I’ll keep this for future reference. This was from Yumi Yarn. Maybe I’m more visual but don’t see how written & video were the same because written had you doing ssk and video didn’t. I have the correct number of stitches so I’m moving on. But since I’ve decided that original sock was practice & I will do another sock, I have been very explicit in my notes what I did with this sock( number of rows for each section) I know a lot of you freely change up things on patterns but I rarely make changes because I lack the confidence in my ability. Which is not exactly correct because I did add the picot bindoff on the first sock, which I loved, which was not in the original pattern. Maybe be I’m branching out a little.

There are a couple of ways of closing up the hole where sts are picked up (picking up an extra stitch which is decreased on the next row, duplicate stitch to close a hole). It’s strange that the pattern has written instructions and a different video but as you say, maybe the video was added later.
Good that you’ve adapted this to your sock and made it work.

Good work! I like toe-up sock knitting. There’s almost no cast-on and no pick up and knit! Also, I change needle sizes on the way up the leg for a good fit. I also use my own “recipe” and just use different stitches. Keep on branching out!
