Pretty scarf edge

Is there a way to make the edge of a scarf more pretty? I saw a picture one time, it looked like there were v’s on the edge. I’m thinking just a plain ol’ garter or st st scarf. Anyone know what i’m talking about?

If you want to, there are umpty-eleven lace edges that could be knit right along with the scarf. Or for a very simple edge treatment:

Row 'A" RS: on second stitch and next to last stitch increase
repeat row 'A" “x” times (five would be a good number)

then Row ‘B’ RS: decrease once one stitch in from each edge.
repeat row ‘B’ the same number of times as you did 'A"

continue to alternate rows A & B at whatever frequency you’ve chosen.

It sounds like a slip stitch edge. You can do that by either slipping the first stitch of every row, or slipping the last stitch of every row.

suzeeq - that sounds simple enough, I will try that. Thank you!

mmario - I didn’t understand yours… sounds really complicated. I don’t do lace knitting… yet. But thanks for the reply!

I often slip the first stitch of scarves and it does make a nice, smooth finished edge.

there EDGE stitches (see Nicky epsteins Knitting on the edge/over the edge/beyond the edge for 1000+ ideas)

and there are selvage stitches…
(these usually require 5 or more stitches of garter(or other stitch pattern) in addition 'fancy selvage–to keep stocking knit from curling --or they can be used an a garter stitch scarf)

1 chain (slip LAST (or First) stitch on each row. (twist stitch if desired) (use with garter or sead stitch border)

2-Increase (picot.) work to last stitch, cast on 2 (use Knitted cast on)
turn work, bind off 2.
work picot every, or every other row. (or ever other row, or every third row
(you can make bigger picots (cast on 3, 4, 5!) just be sure to bind off same in next row. bigger picots look better with more rows of spacing between)

3-interesting --but tricky–Yarn over (wrap yarn round right needle!) then K2tog-- Every row.

4-eyelet. K1, (or 2) YO, K2tog, K2, (or as many as needed for edging (garter stitch)

Garter is the most common edging for scarf… but a serated garter…

R1:–work to last stitch. cast one 1
R2: K1, YO, (continue with edging called for in pattern,
repeat on other edge–then cast on 1
R3: K1, Yo (continue with edging called for in pattern,
repeat on other edge–K2, YO, k1
R4: K1, YO, K3, (continue with edging called for in pattern,
repeat on other edge)–K2, YO, k1
R5: K1 YO, K3,(continue with edging called for in pattern,
repeat on other edge)- Knit all edge stitches (K5)
R6: bind off 6 stitches, (all the extra cast on over last 5 rows) work scarf, at other edge, knit all stitches (no yarn oves
row 7 Bind off all extra stitches (bind off 6)
Row 8-start again with row 1 of pattern…

this will give scarf a saw tooth/serated edge… a little fancy…

(and as i said Nicky Epstiens trio of edging books will give you another 1000+ )
