I have a question
Welcome to KH! Ask your question! Iâm sure there will be help.
Ask away. Lovely stitch patterns on this blanket.
My question is - (iâm kind of newer to knitting) - it gives a full description of each pattern in the beginning of the pattern instructions, but on the actual knitting instructions it says to only use row 1 and row 2 of each. So why would they put all the rows for each pattern at the top? I was a bit confused by that.
Itâs a challenging pattern with lovely stitch patterns.
Row 1 and 2 in the instructions set the position of the stitch patterns. For row 3 continue with row 3 of the stitch pattern in the initial instructions, then row 4 and so on. Youâll use all the stitch pattern rows as you work the throw rows.
Itâll help to keep track of the different stitch pattern rows since they are of different lengths (different number of rows in each pattern). The rows will repeat, some after 4 rows, some after 12 or 16 rows.
Youâve got this!
hi - thanks for the answer - but it says ârepeat these two rowsâ. so i thought i needed to just do row 1 and 2 over and over again.
so youâre saying for row 3 I should use row 3 in the descriptions at the top for each one and then row 4 in the descriptions at the top? and so for example the the zig zag will repeat after row 16 but the diagonal rib will repeat after four rows?
Youâve understood perfectly. Yes the pattern directions are a bit misleading but you rightly questioned them. Keep going with each of the pattern stitch rows as given at the beginning of the instructions. You can keep your place with several row counters or on a computer or with good old pencil and paper.
The repeat frequency will varry depending on the number of rows in each pattern stitch.
Iâm not surprised you were a bit confused by it saying repeat rows 1 and 2, it could have been clearer by saying something likely, âcontinue with next row of each stitch patternâ.
Well, its good youâre on track now.
I havenât made a blanket, itâs a big project. Iâve made sweaters with sections that have different numbers of rows for each stitch pattern and bought some different coloured row counters to keep track.
I hope youâll share some progress pics, we all like seeing photos.
I will try! thanks so much for your help. I just joined the forum so hoping I can figure out how to post pics and stuff. I donât do FB or any social media so this is kinda new!
That pattern is definitely confusing! I just sent a note to PremierâŚweâll see what they say.
To post a picture, click on the little Landscape icon, between Quotes and Emoji. It will open an option to upload files or photos. You need to have the photo already in your device. It can take a while to upload, so keep that window open until it finishes.
Itâs ok to be new, itâs ok not to know. I also donât use any antisocial media. This forum is so well moderated and friendly.
Any questions about how to use the forum or pattern questions just ask.
I got an answer from Premier. Not sure if it will help or notâŚ
Thanks for contacting Premier Yarns. For each section, Row 1 and Row 2 establish the pattern placement, as there are multiple stitch patterns being worked across the rows:
Section One
Row 1 (RS): K2, *work Diagonal Rib over 36 sts, p2, work Zig Zag over 36 sts, p2; rep from * to last 38 sts, work Diagonal Rib over 36 sts, k2.
Row 2 (WS): K2, *work Diagonal Rib over 36 sts, k2, work Zig Zag over 36 sts, k2; rep from * to last 38 sts, work Diagonal Rib over 36 sts, k2.
Rep these 2 rows 23 more times for a total of 48 rows.
Once the pattern is established on those rows, you continue in that manner, with the 2 st rev St st columns between each stitch pattern. Then you work the indicated stitch patterns as defined in the Stitch Guide, this varies by each pattern, but it tells you how many repeats to work for the 48 rows of each section. For example:
Diagonal Rib (36 sts)
Row 1 (RS): (K2, p2) 9 times.
Row 2 (WS): (P1, k2, p1) 9 times.
Row 3: (P2, k2) 9 times.
Row 4: (K1, p2, k1) 9 times.
Work Rows 1-4, 12 times (48 rows total) for patt.
At the beginning of each section, you begin the stitch patterns at Row 1 and work through the rows in order as defined, for the number of repeats indicated.
Hope that helps, happy knitting!
Premier Yarns
Itâs still a bit confusing, but the âRepeat these 2 rowsâ part is really only telling you to keep switching from Diagonal Ribbing to Zig Zag as established by the first 2 rows. I would put markers between each pattern to make it easier to know when to switch, and keep my place in the charts by putting a Post-it above the row Iâm working. I put it above the row so I donât accidentally see the line above and knit that.
Thank you!!!
