Positive and negative ease

Have you accounted for the edge stitch (a K1 on the RS row) so that the 14 initial sts are Edge stitch, 13 lattice sts?
The best way to work the lattice is to look at the stitches as they present on row 2. If the stitch looks like a V, knit it. If it looks like a bump, purl it. The pattern should give you the way to work the lattice pattern but reading your knitting is a failsafe.
The same will hold for the cable column where the sts are knits on the RS and will be purls on the WS. Since there aren’t decreases in the cables until you reach the neck, reading the sts will work. Once you get to the neck decreases, you will only be able to complete part of the cables or the lattice. Work as much as you can of the central cables or lattice but where you can’t complete a cable cross, work in stockinette stitch.
Are you currently at the neck shaping?

Hello
You might find it helpful to place a couple more markers.
Row 1 begins k1 and does not state to place marker but I would think one here could help you.
Then 13 for lattice, then marker
Continue
Then at the end of row there is lattice of 13 and it does not state to place marker but again a marker here may help you.then there is 1 stitch which on row 1 is k1.

When you turn for row 2 you have 1 stitch, marker, 13 stitches. (It is not 14 stitches but a 1 and 13)
Row 2: Purl 1
Slip marker
Lattice 13 stitches - lattice is (k1, p1) rep to last stitch, k1
Slip marker

Does this help?

Thank you @salmonmac, yea I have 1 knit at the edge + 13 of the lattice. Will follow your advice. Many thanks.
I have just started the lattice and cable column. Nowhere near the neck yet.

Row 2 (WS) :
P1,
Work row 2 of lattice pattern until marker : I will put a marker after the edge st like @Creations has suggested. That will ensure that the row 2 lattice of 13 st is completed indeed !!
The next is :
Work row 2 of cable column until marker. This works smoothly as the number of stitches until marker is 12 st. So 2x (K1,P4,K1) works well.
The next is again :
Work row 2 of cable column until marker.
Now, here I have 17 stitches to work.
Once I do 2 repeats of (K1,P4,K1), I have 5 stitches left. That would be K1, P4 until the marker. So “incomplete”. I will not knit the last K1 of the repeat.
I guess this is fine.

Will read my knitting and watch out for the Vs and bumps.

Very helpful @Creations.
Putting a marker after the edge st is helpful to get the lattice stitches right !!

I still have the issue when I do the cable column though :frowning: like I have written in my reply to salmonmac

Hmm, on row 1 you were able to work 12sts for the double cables (P1, K4, P1) x2. Then row 2 should be
(K1, P4, K1)x2. Until the pattern becomes clearer (probably after 4-6rows) you might extend Creations suggestion of markers to each of the motifs or charts.
Looking at the photo, there appears to be a column of purl sts on each side of the double cables and running up the center, separating the cables. So that would be the P1,K4,P1 plus at least an extra purl or two on one end.
It may help if you quote row row 1 of the pattern. You don’t have to quote the first row of the chart, just tell us how many sts in the chart and your total number of sts.

Indeed the first cable column is straightforward with 12 stitches.
row 2 is
(K1, P4, K1)x2.
It is the second cable column with 17 stitches that is confusing.

My total number of stitches is 127.
The lattice chart is 13 stitches, the cable column 6.
There is no overall chart given in the pattern.

Are you perhaps getting confused with the cable and lattice?

You have posted a list above of rows and the cable rows are all 6 or 12, the sweater has a double cable near the side seam and single in the middle.
The lattice panel rows are run on 13, 17 and 29 stitches
The lattice pattern always has either a p1 before the 2 stitch repeat (row 1) or a k1 after the 2 stitch repeat (row 2) .
As salmonmac has said, reading the fabric is actually easier than trying to work out these repeat numbers.
Knit the knits and purl the purls.

that is indeed correct @Creations.

Thanks for that succinct summary. Let me give it a shot, reading what I knit

just Giving the Row 2 as well below for completeness sake :
Establish pattern :
Row 1 (RS) :
K1,
work row 1 lattice over 13 st, place marker
Work row 1 of cable column over 12 st, place marker
Work row 1 of lattice over 17 st, place marker
Work row 1 of cable column over 6 st, place marker
Work row 1 of lattice over 29 st, place marker
Work row 1 of cable column over 6 st, place marker
Work row 1 of lattice over 17 st, place marker
Work row 1 of cable column over 12 st, place marker
Work row 1 of lattice over 13 st,
K1

Row 2 (WS): says

P1,
Work row 2 of lattice till marker,
(Work row 2 of cable column till marker ) 2 times
Work row 2 of lattice till marker,
Work row 2 of cable column to marker,
Work row 2 of lattice till marker,
Work row 2 of cable column to marker,
Work row 2 of lattice till last st,
P1

The cable columns and lattice will not line up if done per row 2 above. A mistake in the pattern, do you think ?

Yes, Row 2 doesn’t make sense as written. It’s missing the Central panel and a cable column.
It should read:
P1,
Work row 2 of lattice till marker,
(Work row 2 of cable column till marker ) 2 times
Work row 2 of lattice till marker,
Work row 2 of cable column to marker,
Row 2 of Central panel
Row 2 of Cable
Work row 2 of lattice till marker,
Work row 2 of cable column to marker,
Work row 2 of lattice till last st,
P1

That is:
P1,
Work row 2 of lattice till marker,
(Work row 2 of double cable column till marker ) 2 times
Work row 2 of lattice till marker,
Work row 2 of single cable column to marker,
Row 2 of Central panel
Row 2 of single Cable
Work row 2 of lattice till marker,
Work row 2 of double cable column to marker,
Work row 2 of lattice till last st,
P1
where I’ve distinguished between the single and double cables as shown in the pattern photo.

Then that adds up to 129sts and is the back side of Row 1.

Awesome @salmonmac, I get it now and that sounds like I can do it
The stitches will now fall in place ……

Gosh ! That is a costly mistake in a pattern for novices like me :astonished:

(Adds upto 127 stitches?)

Thanks a lot @salmonmac and @Creations

Sorry, yes, 127sts. You’ve got this!

And actually the
“Work row 2 of double cable column till marker” - already indicates you repeat it twice,
So misleading when the pattern says
“(Work row 2 of cable column till marker) 2 times

I’ll say so. Worth messaging the designer on Ravelry to let her know about these errors. Unfortunately you now need to be alert for any further rows that don’t make sense.

Will do so. And yes, will need to be alert (no Multi tasking with podcasts). Thanks a ton to both of you !

That’s a huge mistake in the pattern, and it’s not even a free pattern which I sometimes expect to have an error or bit of messy transition somewhere.

Don’t forget the front and back are different. Is this the back piece? So a lattice central panel, whereas the front piece has a wider more complex cable central panel.

Glad to see you are back on track.

@Creations, can’t thank you and @salmonmac enough for putting me back on track.

I got this pattern from Universal yarns or love crafts in 2022 Jan - can’t remember which one. It was free - and I remember being surprised as it is a great design.

I checked it again now and see that it is a paid pattern - which may have been updated with corrections. I have sent a message to the designer Amy Gunderson and Universal Yarns.

Will await their reply and consider getting a paid version of the pattern.

Thanks again !

Yes, this is the back and the front does have this beautiful central panel :grinning:
Can’t wait to get to that

Oh ! It is a paid pattern on Ravelry and still a free pattern on Universal Yarns website !!

The wonders of knitting pattern sales and promotions! Thank you for sending a message to the designer. Enjoy working the pattern and please post a photo when you finish.

At least you know you would have no advantage in paying for the pattern. I’m sure I’ve seen other patterns listed as paid for when available for free elsewhere too.
