Hi everybody! My name is Kathy and I’m new here. I’m a beginner.
I need some advice. I grossly miscalculated the cast on for a simple poncho made of two rectangles sewn together. Halfway through the first rectangle, I realize that it is DOUBLE the width it should be. Is there anything that can be done to salvage the work, or should I just rip it out and start over? I was thinking maybe a slit armhole on one side and sewing the other side up to the same point?
All advice appreciated! So glad to have somewhere to ask questions I dont know any knitters around here.
Welcome to the group.
My suggestion is to turn the edges into a front opening then make horizontal slits at hand level on both sides using a technique called “The after thought heel technique”.

I’ve never heard of this. Looks good, like sweater surgery.

Maybe something from a one piece poncho pattern might help you work out how to use your double sized rectangle. I find sometimes just looking at other patterns and possibilities helps me work out a solution.
You might be able to seam then pick up and knit a neck edge or collar/cowl/hood from there, depending what your original plans had been.
Thank you so much! I’ll give it a try.
I’m glad you like it. Another use I have found for this technique (and now use often) is Convertible Top Mittens or Flip Top Mittens. Convertible Fenway Mitts is a detailed pattern with step by step pictures that made it easy to follow.
