i am having difficulty with a stitch:Cr2L it is paired with Cr2R and is supposed to produce a branched cable with alternate panels of stocking stitch and a rugged diamond pattern up the front of a sweater. i cannot get the branched cable st to work. i have much experience in knitting and this is the first trouble i have ever experienced, i have exhausted all my knowledge and need expert help.
Cr2R: knit into front of 2nd st L hand needle, then purl into front of first st and slip both sts off needle together.
Cr2L: purl into back of 2nd st on L hand needle, then knit into front of first st and slip both sts off needle together.
the Cr2R produces the proper pattern a beautiful branched st, but the Cr2L does not,it gives me a bump in the middle of the sts. i have contacted the company that put the pattern out and they told me it works. they had no suggestions where i could get any help but basically told me sometimes patterns don’t look as we think they should, well maybe that is true, but this looks terrible and nothing like the picture can anybody help me? maybe guide me to a picture illustration or something? i believe i am purling into the back of the 2nd st incorrectly i am so frusterated and this sweater is for my little girl, she pick out the pattern for me to knit and i am failing miserably
I don’t know how the two cross stitches are used in your pattern, but I tried your two sets of directions right next to each other and I get just the opposite problem. My Cr2L looks best. So maybe between the two of us we can get this.
Here is how I did the Cr2L and it looks good. When I get to the place where I need to begin… with the yarn in front to begin with, I turn the work so that the back side is facing me and moving the right needle from right to left, insert the tip into the second stitch from the end on the left hand needle. At that point I turn the work around so that the front faces me again, yarn around and complete the purl from that position. (In other words purl into the back loop of the second stitch.) Do not slide the stitch off the needle. Now bring the yarn to the back and knit into the stitch you skipped in the normal place. This makes a nice smooth crossed stitch. Is this different than what you tried?
The Cr2R made a bump when I did it. I don’t know why. But if you can do your nice Cr2R and get my Cr2L to work you might be in business. LOL
I’m doing a similar pattern on a baby sweater–aran diamonds up the front.
What I do for the right cross is to knit the second stitch. Then I let the first (purl) stitch slide off the needle with the knit stitch. I reinsert my left tip into the stitch. Then I have the knit on the right needle and the purl on the left and can purl the stitch as normal. It’s like doing a cable without a cable needle.
I think the problem with trying to knit and purl in one move with the cross is that you can’t really get the yarn to the front to purl the second stitch. It ends up at the V of where the stitches are twisted–not all the way down between the whole stitches.
Ingrid, I still don’t get the R cross. I wish I did, but I don’t. I get knitting the second stitch. Then when you let the first stitch slide off the needle with the one you knitted, have you worked the first stitch, or let it slip off before you purl it? Then make it a little clearer on where you are inserting the left needle tip in that next step, please. Thanks. Merigold
I have to admit I’m just as confused…I know I’m working on a similar pattern on a scarf, with a seed stitch in between the cabled “diamonds”. I must have frogged it 5 times before I figured out I was cabling everything to the back instead of half to the front and half to the back. Not sure if my mistake will help you though…
What I was trying to describe is pretty much a cable without the cable needle. I just happen to knit the knit stitch, then switch the knit and purl on the needles.
I let the purl stitch slide off with the knit, put the left tip back into it and purl it. It works easier for me. A cable needle would work too. Put the cable needle into the purl and hold in back, knit the stitch and then purl the stitch from the cable needle.
