Please help with Feather and Fan Pattern

I’m planning to knit the Feather and Fan throw I saw in the Knit Picks catalog, and while I wait for my yarn order to show up I figured I’d try the Feather and Fan pattern out on a dishcloth. This is supposed to be an easy pattern, but I’m getting confused on my stitch count. I hope someone can help me figure this out.

This is the pattern:

Cast on 42

Row 1: Knit
Row 2: K3, P to last 3, K3
Row 3: K3, (k2tog) 3x, (yo, k1) 6x repeat from * to last three stitches, K3
Row 4: Knit

In row three, it seems to me that there’s a decrease of 6 stitches with the (k2tog) 3x, which is repeated twice in the row. There’s an increase of 12 stitches though with the (yo, k1) 6x which is also repeated twice per row. Therefore, there’s a net increase of six stitches in that row, which messes up the stitch count for working that row the next time around. Plus, if I’m continually increasing six stitches every fourth row, how can I end up with a rectangular piece?

I know I must be making a fundamental mistake somewhere, but I can’t seem to figure this out. I’d really appreciate some help. Thanks!

Hi,

Seems you’ve missed part of the instructions…

This is directly from the Knit Picks pattern:
Row 3: K1, *[k2tog] 3 times, [yo, k1] 6 times, [k2tog] 3 times;
repeat from * to last st, k1.

But somewhere, you’ve started & ended with K3 instead of K1.

So starting out with 42,
first line is what you’re starting with, second line is what it becomes after the work is done with the row
3 6 6 6 6 6 6 3 = 42
3 3 12 3 3 12 3 3 = 42

Hope this helps,

Diane

Doh! I knew I had to be missing something simple. Thank you!
