Has anybody made Joelle Hoverson’s “Baby’s Denim Drawstring Pants” from her book “Last Minute Knitted Gifts”? I have two questions:
The directions tell you to use a cable cast-on for the crotch area. While I know Amy has directions for cable cast-on, I’m not sure I want to try this; Amy’s comment by the video says it can be hard to work. Do you think the e-wrap cast-on would work okay?
Also, I’m wondering if the drawstring would be an inconvenience for dressing baby (this is for a layette I hope). Has anybody made these with elastic in the waistband instead of a drawstring? I looked on Ravelry and didn’t see any modifications like this (but it’s possible I missed it too).
These are going to be a lot longer than the 4-6 hour range given for the pattern…leg number one took me 2½ hours for the 3-6 month size!:verysad: I saw on Ravelry that a few people had the same experience of it taking longer, but I didn’t know if anyone else could comment on how long theirs took them.
My Mom made these for my DD-and they came out adorable! I didn’t find the drawstring to be a bother, but my DD was already walking. For a small baby, it’s possible it might get in the way, so some soft elastic would be a good idea.
Thanks for your input Hilary! I’m knitting the “diaper area” now; I finished both legs. These pants are just too cute!!! The fabric drapes so nicely and the seed stitch on the bottom looks really nice…I wish I would’ve known about them when I was pregnant with my toddler so I could’ve knit her a pair. I did the e-wrap cast-on and it looks really great, but we’ll see how it turns out when I’m ready to seam.
Regarding the drawstring, I thought it might be too much on mom and dad to fiddle with the drawstring with a squirming baby–I think for an older baby, it would be fine, though (if I made these again in an bigger size, I would probably keep the drawstring). Also, sometimes with drawstrings, you have to pull them pretty tight to have them stay put, and I figured elastic would alleviate that.
Ooooh, they look so good!! I love Gracie’s-I wish I had some for me :teehee: In fact, even though they were long pants to begin with, she still wears them sometimes, only now as capris  . They are holding up very well and soften even more in the wash.
I hope we get to see them when you’re done-maybe even modeled
