Please help me understand this pattern re set-up rows

Hi folks, I am knitting my first cable knit sweater and really hoping that someone here would be willing to help me understand what this is saying. I am confused that is has three separate cast on sections? I am assuming I would cast on 56 stitches to start, but then it says to cast on 18 additional stictches after the set up row? How would I do this?

Welcome to KH!
What is the name of your pattern and designer? Are you making the 4th size?
All sizes start with 48sts cast on. For the 4th size, cast on 18sts more (66sts total) and work across the row as given in Set up Row 1 placing a marker as indicated.
Now turn at the end of the row and cast on 18 more sts then work across the row as given for Set up Row 2 placing a second marker.

Here’s a way to cast on at the end of a row:

Thank you so much for your help! This is October Mornings Sweater by beach house knits. I am making the 66 size. That video is super helpful! This pattern is definitely above my current skill level, but it was the pattern chosen by the person I am gifting it to so I am trying my best and your help is so appreciated!!

Beautiful cables on this sweater. You’re good to stretch to new techniques and unfamiliar patterns. We’re all happy to help you along the way.

I looked at this earlier and wasn’t sure I was reading it right (before coffee). I’m curious as to why the cast on and before (it seems) any knitting is done there is an additional cast on rather than casting all the stitches on and placing markers at the appropriate places. Maybe I’m still reading it wrong.

I’m not clear at all on that cast on after the initial cast on. It’s all one except that there’s a marker. The next cast on is one row lower and perhaps there’s a reason there?

I’m working a top down sweater now that knits the center 30 or so sts of the cast on and then extends those sts by two on each side with short rows. Just one of the quirks for knitting sloping shoulders I guess.

If you’re doing Size 66, you’ll need to cast on 26 more stitches on each side, for 100 stitches total.

I feel like this is a way to avoid doing short-row shaping at the back neck, since it would be hard to do short rows with all that cabling.
