I made an and knitted chunky blanket, and the bottom is wider than the top. It’s bound off already. How do I fix this? Please help!
Welcome to KH. Could you share a photo of your blanket? That would be helpful. Without seeing it I expect the problem is a difference in tension as you knit and/or you might have added stitches unintentionally. Unintended increases can happen in different ways. It’s common to accidentally add a stitch at the end when you turn and start the next row or to have a yarn over somewhere in a row that gets knit into on the next row and makes an increase. You could just accept the blanket as it is and use it or you could rip it out and redo it. I’d probably use it as is.
If you’ve counted the stitches across and checked there are no increases there’s a chance it may even out some if you wash/block it. I think as GG said the tension has changed as you’ve been knitting which resulted in the size change. Blocking may help but it may not be enough to make it fully rectangular.
Nice blanket though!
There are 40 stitches at the bottom and 39 on top?
Somewhere you increased one stitch which by itself can’t account for the size change. It does look like the tension at the start was tighter than at the end. If you measure across 4"/10cm near the top and count the stitches and then again near the bottom you’ll know how much tension changed and the gauge difference. It’s pretty typical for tension to get looser as the knitting progresses. IMHO your blanket is beautiful and just accepting it as it is and using it is the best thing to do. The only other option I can think of is to rip it out and reknit it paying more attention to maintaining consistent tension. Because the yarn is so thick it doesn’t take much relaxing as you knit to see a big difference in the gauge. It shows with thinner yarns too but not always so obviously.
I also crochet and have never had a blanket be the same measurement on both ends. Nobody I know who crochets has either. When in use it doesn’t show or matter and when I fold a blanket that’s not rectangular I either don’t worry about it or do some creative folding to hide it. Perfection is not something I expect to attain. A not-rectangular blanket I made for my granddaughter has lived on her bed for years and even went to college with her. I believe it’s on her bed to this day and that’s another span of years after four years of college to get her master’s so it’s been well used and much loved. That’s all to build up to: Don’t be too critical, learn from this, move on, and knit more lovely things that will be loved and enjoyed.
Thank you so much!! I soaked the blanket in cold water and it is currently laying flat outside I tried to stretch it and guess what? I found the dropped stitch!! Hopefully when it dries nobody will really be able to tell. I made it for my sons birthday and your right I doubt he will be too critical!! Thank you again for your kind words and help!!
The colours are great and it’s made with love!
If you have a loose stitch you’ll want to make sure it’s secured so everything stays together. If you need help with it let us know. I guess I misread. I thought you ended with one more stitch.
Much better than my idea - make another the same shape and join them to make a mermaid tail blanket! Glad you’re getting it sorted anyway!
