Heel completed. Gusset sts picked up. Decreasing started. I find the Heel shaping stressful so I ate a piece of chocolate before I started it. I danced a wee jig like an idiot when I was done.

I’ve not done a heel flap, I’ve gotten pretty good at the short row heel.
:roflhard: mmmm chocolate!
The foot is taking awhile…I hope to be ready to dec the toe tomorrow (I’m huge at nearly 5’9…don’t have small feet even though I’m a woman ugh.)
5’ 9" huh? I think you mean tall, I think that’s what my feet measure. No, that’s size 9.5. Still, no matter how you look at it I have big feet and I’m not as tall as you. Hand knitting lets me have socks fit as I want them to and that’s a real treat! I bet you understand that.
You said you found the heel stressful, I wonder if a different style of heel would be less stressful for you. Or maybe you’ve practiced enough now that it won’t be so stressful and learning a new style would be.
This is my fifth pair and my first in fingering weight.
Are socks easy? I want to make a pair for myself. I would have to use a men’s pattern because I have enormous feet :teehee: I am in a US size 12 in woman’s. I am also 5’9" so don’t feel so bad.
Easy is a relative term. I find them pretty easy. If fit is what you’re after, try Lifestyle socks, skip the pattern, and go straight to comfy socks.
This site has a video for casting on for the toe (no grafting!), there is one for doing the heel, and a bind off. You can make a sock with just these to show you how. Between the toe and heel it’s just knitting in the round, above the heel it’s knitting in the round, probably you’d do ribbing.
Lifestyle Socks: Videos
There are other cast on and heel methods too. You can customize your socks to suit yourself.
I’ve wanted to make myself a pair of socks for a while now, but it looked so intimidating. Now that I’m (kinda-sorta) between projects, I might have to try making a pair.
And, I know if I get stuck, I have an awesome support team waiting to help! I owe thanks to many on this forum, I’ve been reading it for atleast 3 years and finally created an account today :woot:
I taught myself to knit after becoming pregnant with my daughter (and I still haven’t finished that blanket :-x) but have always found the help I needed here, either in a video or a forum.
Anyway… I love the colors in the yarn and can’t wait to see how they turn out!
Hi, Cathena, I’m so glad you de-lurked! You’ll find lots of help here addressing your concerns directly now, just ask! Socks are great because they’re small and portable, you can use all kinds of crazy colors, and just about the time you think you have a pretty good idea of what you’re doing there will be another heel or toe method to try. Definitely not boring. Hand knit socks feel so luxurious too. Your feet will thank you.
First sock completed
Second sock OTN.
Pics to come…
Terrifyingly, the toe grafting came UNDONE! in a panic, I McGyvered it. Lol
Plugging away on sock #2. Cuff completed, starting leg portion. Will probably start heel flap tonight.
So…What would MacGyver do?
No SSS with you!
Heel and decreasing done. Knitting the foot now. I’m alternating between my sock and Dh’s sock.
Finally!
