Placing stitches on holder...& then continue knitting...?

Hello…

I seem to be stumped with something that is probably very basic re: the shaping of the neck for a baby sweater…but I have come so far along with this thing that I am simply afraid of totally messing the whole thing up…

The instructions state: continue the armhole decreases, place first 4 stitches of next two rows on holders, then decrease 1 st. each end every other row 2 times.

Now…my quandary is: Do I knit those first 4 sts. and then place them on the holder? Or am I to place them on the holder and then break the yarn?? And continue on knitting with new yarn?? (which isn’t making a whole lotta sense to me…)

I would so appreciate any clarification around this… My sense is this pattern is meant for well-seasoned knitters…who simply ‘know these things’…

Thanks so much…

sorry im not going to be much help here… but in patterns i have come across using stitch holders if you were required to knit the stitches first it would say something along the lines of " K4 sts, Place these 4 sts on holder"

Sorry not much help :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, I would knit the 4 then place them on the holder and continue across with the same yarn. Turn work 4 and place those on the holder and continue across. Some patterns spell everything out real well and others don’t. It would be too much hassle to break the yarn two times to accomplish this so I’m sure this is what they mean.

Yes, work the sts first, then place on holders. Ignore them after that, dec on the sts just inside the ones on the holders.

Yes…that makes absolute sense…thanks so much. This pattern truly, unfortunately for a still-very-much-needing-to-be-walked-thru knitter as myself, assumes a lot…

…glad I got you folks…

Appreciate it…
E.

Shape NeckRow 1 (wrong side): K6 and place these front band sts on stitch holder, bind off 5 sts, p to end of row—15 (17, 19, 21) sts remain on needle.

Hello everyone. Could someone please explain this to me. It’s the first time I’m knitting a sweater, and I don’t want to mess it up. I’m shaping the neck, and I can’t figure out the following:

  1. Do I cut the yarn after I place the first six stitches on a holder?

  2. If yes, how do I re-attach the yarn?

I’d be grateful for any help :slightly_smiling_face:

You don’t need to cut the yarn. Knit across the 6 stitches, place them on a holder and then use the same yarn strand to begin the bind off of 5 sts. You can hold the stitch holder close to the right needle so there isn’t a big gap between the held sts and the next knit sts.

Although you won’t need it here, re-attaching yarn can be done by holding the yarn end alongside a needle and knitting. You don’t need to knot it. The first stitch or 2 may be a bit loose but you can always snug it up by pulling on the yarn end. Leave about a 6" tail which can be woven in later.

Yes, knit those stitches, then place them on a holder, then you will be able to continue knitting without any issue. You will not likely need to join new yarn.

What pattern are you making?

Thank you so much. Really didn’t want to mess up after coming so far :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you :slightly_smiling_face:
