Pickup Stitches?

I’m learning pickup stitches and I’m just a lil bit confused. After you pick them up you’re supposed to knit them, right? Everything I read and watch (online) they only say how to pick them up but not what to do afterward. If you knit them you just knit like normal right? Sorry this is like a dumb question.

Nothing dumb about it.

“Pick up and knit” is a confusing direction, and it really should be changed to just “pick up” IMNSO.

You insert the needle at the place where you want to pick up a stitch, wrap the yarn around it and pull it through. That’s all there is to it. The act of wrapping and pulling through automatically creates a knit stitch.

BTW, it’s a lot easier to pick up (or Pick-up-and-knit) with a crochet hook.

If you knit them you just knit like normal right?

Assuming you’re doing a pattern, pick up the req’d number of sts and THEN you’d do whatever the instructions dictate. (For ex, if you’re doing a neck and/or button band.) Your patt should advise as to the total number of sts to be picked up OR the ratio (ex: PU 3 sts over 4 rows). Whether you K or P the PU sts depends on your instructions. Make sure you pick up on the correct side (usually RS facing).

Pick up and knit is an old term that used to mean pick up the stitches on the edge of a piece with your left needle and knit them with the right. Now we just do it as one step, but the old 2 step terminology is often used when it’s just the one step.

Ok that makes sense :). Thanks a lot all of you  . . . but now I need help with cables. lol. Here’s the pic.

Am I knitting too loose on the left? or what’s wrong? . . . Something is wrong right?

That’s a common problem. You’ll need to work the K>P transition twisted (work the P tbl) to shorten the amt of yarn used OR you can try tugging at that point to snug it up. Sometimes the slack will lessen when washed/dried.
