Hi! I am new to knitting and am a little confused by reading the patterns. I am trying to make a bag and don’t know what it means to “pick up stitches”
After knitting the bottom of the bag, the pattern says “At the end of the last row, pick up 30 sts on the short side of piece, 40 sts along bottom of piece, and 30 sts on remaining short side. PM and join in the round”
Could someone please explain this to me?
Thank you! http://www.cascadeyarns.com/patternsFree/DK352_BeachBag.pdf
Hello
He’s a video on how to pick up and knit. There are lots of tutorials available if you need more.
On each side work out ahead of time how to space out your picked up stitches so that it’s even. Half the length of side for half the stitches. And work your way around.
In the video she uses new yarn, if you already have working yarn in the right place you can continue with that (it sounds like you already have the stitches for one edge so just continue to pick up with the working needle and working yarn).
Hope this helps. Feel free to ask more questions.
