I am never satisfied with the look I get when picking up stitches for the neck of a sweater. Usually the left side looks better than the right. This must be because the decreases that shape the neck are different on the one side than on the other but I can’t figure out how to make them look smoother. I try to pick up the two loops on top that look like a crocheted chain - but again this easier on the one side than on the other. Any ideas?
I usually pick up stitches in the first full stitch from the edge rather than the very top layer.

Does this help the neck stand up or lie flat? My problem is that the front always flops over.

It could be that you’re picking up too many sts around the neck. Sometimes because of differences in stitch or row gauge, it doesn’t work to pick up the pattern number of sts around the neck. Picking up one for one across a bind off and about 3 for every 4 rows up the side edges gives a better neckband.
Mark off the neckband into sections (4 quarters usually works) and pick up fewer sts on the next try at the band and see if that helps whenever you find the collar too loose or floppy.

Depending on the design of the sweater you might prefer the look and fit of a folded neck band. I reworked a neck band which was single layer into a folded band and the entire sweater looked and fitted so much better. There are some good tutorials for how to fold the band in and sew it down on tne inside so it looks very neat too.
