Pick up stitches from the wrong side?

Hi! I’m working on a blanket with a ruffle. Main blanket part is done now, and The pattern now says “starting with cast on edge, pick up 97 stitches and with the right side facing begin the ruffle pattern” . How do I pick up stitches and then knit the first row with the right side facing me still? Do I need to pick up the stitches from the wrong side, or pick up from the right side but work left to right? Help!

Good question. I’m not 100% sure. Is the first row of the ruffle the right side of the fabric? I think if you pick up from the wrong side there will be a not-too-attractive seam on the right side, so I don’t think they want you to do that. If the first row of the ruffle is the right side I guess you will need to pick up from the front going left to right as you said, that is possible to do.

Of course, if the first row of the ruffle, on closer investigation, is actually the wrong side of the fabric you could pick up from the right side, right to left and work the wrong side first and be on track.

You could pick up the stitches with the rs facing and work a purl row back.

Or, pick up the stitches purlwise with the wrong side facing you.

insert your needle from back to front and wrap the yarn as if to purl (the yarn will be in front of the work) and bring the needle through to the back.

Marigold, I assume the first row of ruffle is RS because the pattern says, with the RS facing start the ruffle pattern…

Ingrid, if I purl from the WS, won’t that be the same as picking up left to right on the RS?

You can pick up with the R needle. Do it knitwise with the RS facing, or purlwise with the WS facing. Doing it in one step you’d go R to left.

Ingrid, if I purl from the WS, won’t that be the same as picking up left to right on the RS?

When you turn your work, the yarn will be in the right place for you to start knitting the first row of your ruffle and the picked up stitches will be there waiting for you

Another simple idea is just to pick it up from the right side right to left, cut the yarn and go back to the place you began picking up and start knitting the first row from the right side. Just means an extra end to work in.

Is the ruffle on the top and bottom of the blanket or all the way around? If it’s all the way around, you’ll pick these stitches up with a circular needle from right to left, join the end to the beginning, and knit it as a round. You’ll have the right side of the blanket toward you when you pick up.
