I need to pick up and knit, but the pattern says to cast on stitches, then pick up and knit
Its for a hood on a babies cardi
I cant work out out to do the pick up, when I already have stitches on the needle
Welcome to the forum!
Cast on the sts then take the needle with sts in your right hand and use the working yarn and the needle tip to pick up the necessary sts.
Here’s a video that may help. This could be done with sts already on the needle.
Thanks so much for this. The pattern actually says to pick up 23 stitches along the neckline.
I am making the hood & then cast on some more stitches.
Should I take these evenly over the back of neck, as there are 51 stitches in total, on the cast off back of neck.
Pick up 23 sts over the cast off of 51sts? Is that right? You would pick up about one stitch every 2 cast off sts. Or is it 23sts total over the entire neckline?
What is the name of the pattern?
The pattern is a UKHKA 90
The pattern just says Cast on 22 sts, using same needle & yarn pick up and knit 23 sts from back of neck, cast on 22 stitches
Quite confusing for a novice!
This is probably more difficult to think about than to do with the needles. You’ll have sts on the right needle. Then just use the working yarn to start picking up sts along the back neck. Once you have picked up, cast on more sts.
Here’s a video for casting on sts when you already have some sts on the needle. See especially after 1:00 minute. You will have the picked up sts on the right needle before casting on so the video isn’t exactly your situation but the idea of casting on after there are already sts on the needle is the same.
