Pick up and knit into front and back

Hi,

I am knitting “Green Autumn (druid mittens)” from Jared Flood and I try to understand how to knit THUMB…
Here is the explanation :
“Beg at outer edge of palm, pick up 12 sts along 10 cast-on sts as foll: k into front and back of first st to pick up 2 sts, pick up 1 in each of next 8 sts, k into front and back of last st to pick up 2 sts …”

I know how to knit into front and back for increasing but I really don’t understand how to [COLOR=“SeaGreen”][B]pick up and knit into front and back[/B][/COLOR]…

Somebody could please help me ?..

Generally when you pick up sts you insert the needle under both strands of the stitch you’re picking up from. Try inserting the needle under both strands - that’ll give you 2 sts there.
