Today was one of the worst days of my life. Our sweet little boy dog, Toby, who was 13 years old, had to be euthanized. It was awful, watching the vet administer the drugs. Toby has been sick for a while, and we had him hospitalized every day at the vet’s, and they gave him so many drugs and IVs, but his condition did not improve. The little baby was trying so hard to be brave, and not to show he was hurting, but the last few days of his life, he did not even get out of his bed except to use the bathroom on a nearby pee pad. He wasn’t eating or drinking for days. It would have been extremely selfish and hateful for me to prolong his painful days and nights. We got to sit with Toby in a lovely comfort room at the vet’s and spend as much time with him as we wanted. After he died, I just fell apart. I tried so hard to do everything right for Toby, but he was 13, and his time to leave this earth had come. NO matter what we (they) did, his intestines did not stop bleeding, and his body was shutting down more every day. Dogs are the most wonderful, God-given blessing on this earth as a pet. The most loyal, forgiving, loving, happy babies.
My condolences. It’s so difficult to say good-bye when you’ve had a wonderful dog in the family. Remember all the good days.

I have been where you are, several times. You did the most painful, yet most humane, thing for your beloved pet. Keep thinking of all the wonderful times you had with him and try to put the final vet visit out of your mind.

That is hard to do, and I’m glad to meet someone who has had to make that awful decision for their precious pet. You did it several times? I feel for you, I really do. I admired the vet, she kept her composure the whole time she was administering the final shot, but after Toby died, and she was sure of it, she went to pieces with me. What do you do to put that last hour out of your mind when it shows up?

Here’s a little picture of Toby: The other picture was him during the winter, with all his splendid Pomeranian fur, and this one was more recent, he had to have a “haircut” about 4 times every summer. That undercoat was too much heat for him. We live in Florida, and we have temps around 97 to 101 in July, and this year, those temperatures lasted even longer, into August. So, Toby doby had to have his haircuts. He “permitted” his groomer to give them to him. Ha ha
P.S. His groomer called me to express sympathy, she said one of her dogs (she has had 20 in her lifetime) had what Toby died of, and she said it went downhill so fast, like what happened to Toby. Diahrreah, vomiting, and then intestinal bleeding. No appetite, no desire for water. I used to get so upset any time Toby had loose stools, and this time, it ended up killing him. He had all his vaccinations, too, and we never took him to dog parks, he didn’t like other dogs anyways. Our yard is fenced in too.
So sorry for your loss. You did all to help him. I understand your pain because I grieve for my cat even after 8 years she is gone. She was 17 years with us. Not even new cat can replace her, don’t get me wrong I love Summer but Cica will be in my heart forever.
You are so kind, and it truly is something only a pet owner can understand. You had your cat 17 years! She was a definite family member! What did she look like? Did she like to jump on the table while you were having a meal? I haven’t had a cat in decades, but they are very agile and curious!
I don’t have pets any more. I’ve had a few but they died quite young and I was devasted.
My cat used to play hide and seek and fetch with me.
At my advanced age, we have made that decision many times, since we’ve had cats and dogs our entire married life, 58 years and counting. We try to save them at any monetary cost but there comes a time when we say he or she has gone through enough. Our whole family would be with our baby at the vets and he or she went to sleep. Our dogs were always inside dogs and so were our cats, with few exceptions of inside/outside boys.
I know you miss Toby, but think about what a great life he had with you. Be grateful that you were able to relieve him of any suffering, something we humans can’t do.
Awwwww, a cat playing fetch is really unique. I tried to get Toby to bring toys back to me, but he wouldn’t. He’d sit there with it and nibble on it like it had fleas. That’s nice, your cat played fetch and hide and seek.
You’re right, I know it did relieve his suffering. He did have a good life, he had 3 beds, plus ours, he stayed indoors or sat in the yard with me, I never let him outside alone. Plenty of toys, treats, and love. Lots and lots of love. I called him my little buddy. Before he died, I held him in my arms like you would hold an infant, he relaxed and looked at me, and wagged his tail. That was the first time he had wagged his tail since he had gotten sick. The last time too, and I think that was a little gift from God.
58 years is a milestone of marriage. Marriage is hard work, isn’t it? Husband and I have been married 45 years. Yes, you DO try to save them at any cost, yes, but it was at the point that no matter what the vet did, he did not get better.
