Perming My Own Hair

Does anyone here perm their own hair? Every time I get it done at the salon, I just cringe at the price!! I’ve permed my grandmother’s hair several times, but let’s face it, it wasn’t very stylish!! If you’ve done it, is it very hard? What product do you like the best?

Thanks!

Stacy

You’re a brave woman, Stacy!

I went through a perm phase in the late 80’s and my mom always did mine for me. Shoot - when I need a change I still wash in my own color highlights. I cringe at the thought of a haircut let alone color and perms. You would need to be pretty talented to put your own hair on rollers…esp behind your head. Can you find a friend to help you put the rollers in? Just a thought too I remember my mom always using one size larger rollers than we thought necessary to make the curls a little softer.
Sorry but I don’t remember the brand at all…
Best of luck and if it doesn’t work it will always grow out or I think you can buy products to soften it.

I’ve always done my own hair. It’s not easy to do…well it’s not hard, but you have to be careful when wrapping/winding the curls that you don’t bend the ends. I use two piece of paper and slide them down to the end. Your arms get tired after a while and the back of your head is difficult. The next hardest part is putting on the waving lotion… it tends to run in your face. I use cotton balls stuffed around the edges of my face and neck as much as I can, but they don’t stay under the rods very well. You can buy some of the long cotton they use at the salon in the beauty supply and it’s easier. Then use a wet rag to wipe it off your skin as much as you can. I always use Ogilvie…the self timing one. If you can have a friend or someone help it would be really nice.

I saw the Ogilvie brand today at Walgreens and that’s what made me start to wonder. My DH has offered to be my extra hands if I decide to try it myself.

I have never permed my own hair, but I gave my Mom her perms for over 45 years, since I was 11 years old; she told me what to do and I did it! Winding the hair is the most time consuming part, Mom had very thick and straight hair, it would take about 1&1/2 hours to do this part. Her favorite home perm was the Lilt perm, it lasted longer. We tried the Ogilvie, but it “fell out” after a few months.
I agree that it would be a lot easier to have some help with this, if Hubby wants to help, let him…even though it takes a bit of time, none of the steps in giving a perm are that difficult…good luck:thumbsup:

I have never done my own hair, but the hair stylist would check mine in 15 or 20 minutes, (my hair would burn easily) by unwinding one roller to look at the curl. Also, I have noticed that when she put the cotton wrap around my head, the stuff around my forehead would soak up the solution and that part would be a lot looser because of it. Good luck. I am not brave or talented in that area, but I can relate to cringing at the price.
