People actually consume Kool aid?

I imagine it’s some kind of drink mix? And you guys are using it to dye yarn! Imagine what it is doing to you if you consume it!!! Please just stick to dying wool with it, for my peace of mind here in Australia…

Well, we also use Wilton’s icing dye and food coloring to dye yarn. Both of those are consumed. I don’t think it’s that bad? I mean, I don’t personally like the taste, but usually little kids do. It’s basically powdered food coloring with flavor and citric acid.

It’s the acid that allows it to be dyed without the additional use of vinegar or whatever. But it’s citric acid, and people eat that all the time in lemons, limes, etc.

I’ve never heard of kool-aid causing anything other than an upset stomach from too much sugar.

Kool-Aid and other flavored drink mixes were the mainstain of American households when I was growing up in the 60’s & 70’s!

Children drinking soda/pop/colas generally wasn’t allowed except on special occasions in my family. Kool-Aid was what we got!

Well, let’s see now, we can use wine to dye yarn with, coffee, tea, cranberry juice, onion skins…

Kool Aide is just flavoring, citric acid (Vitamin C), food coloring, and sugar. Pretty much what’s in commercial orange juice these days, and certainly what’s in carbonated soft drinks.

I imagine Berts Creaming Soda, Orange, Green Ice, and/or Pineapple would make great dyes. Just require a bit more rinsing than Kool Aid would to get rid of the sugar. :teehee:

Onion skins?

Yup, onion skins, and more onion skins. :-P

Shut the front door! That is beautiful! I have never dyed anything so I am clueless but that inspires me a bit!

Onion skins make the most beautiful brown color, beets make a glorious ruby with undertones of purple.
