Pattern not right? (Figured out.... for now)

I’m trying my hand at this Garter Stitch Dog Jacket. I know it’s been a while since I was last in school, but I’m thinking this pattern just isn’t adding up. Can you take a look? I cast on 45 followed it up through to the end of the 36 rows of increasing by one but I’m not anywhere close to having the 11.25" the pattern thinks I should have. If by gauge 6 rows =1" then shouldn’t the 36 I just knitted=6" (a little longer yes for cast on and the 1st 2 plain knits and the 2 rows of inc by 3 but still).

Am I missing something, is the pattern missing something?
Gauge

4 sts and 6 rows = 1" in garter stitch (knit every row)

Body

Cast on 19 (25, 31, 37, 45, 51, 57, 63) sts.

Knit 2 rows.

Cont in st garter stitch, inc 3 sts at start of next 2 rows—25 (31, 37, 43, 51, 57, 63, 69) sts.

Inc 1 st at start of every row 10 (18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 50, 56) times—35 (49, 61, 73, 87, 99, 113, 125) sts.

If necessary, work even until piece measures 4.5 (6.25, 8, 9.5, 11.25, 13, 14.75, 16.5) inches from cast on edge. End with a WS row.
Thanks for looking.

Well, it looks like to me that the 40 rows you would knit would not get you anywhere near 11", but the pattern does say that if necessary to continue knitting until you reach that point. My guess is that for some of the other sizes, the number of rows they’ve knit to that point is enough and they don’t have to continue knitting, but for your size, you do.

Nah, that doesn’t add up either. The difference between what the gauge indicates the length should be and what the pattern says it should be increases dramatically as the sizes go up. The difference between the actual gauge and what the pattern says for the smallest size differs by 2.17" and at this same point in the pattern the largest size would be off by 6.5". I’m thinking the pattern would have at least one of the lengths matching up to the gauge.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

This jacket IS being knit from the butt toward the head right? It must be since there are instructions further down for armhole shaping. My first thought was that the pattern was missing the decrease parts that make the body strap piece things. (can you tell I read a lot of patterns… lol). I wonder if the rest of the pattern will add up.

:shrug:Maybe I should just keep going up to 11.25".:pout:

That’s what I’d do. If it doesn’t work, you haven’t lost anything but time!

:figureditout: Duh, I get it. The pattern says “If necessary, work even until piece measures…” Work even so I quit increasing and just work across even until the piece reaches 11.25".

It’s sooo simple; yet always overthink these things.

Thanks gals for helping!
