Pattern instructions confusing

That looks good. Yes, 4 gaps which close up when you knit around to the position of the new BOR.

So just to confirm that short row 4 i am purling to 2 st before gap but on this side i will have only two stitches between gap because i there is no yarn over? In my picture i am about to purl the last stitch before turning. Is that correct?

There should always be a yo at the turn. That helps avoid a hole due to the short row turn.

(Some on Ravelry have changed the yo short row to a German short row but if you’re used to yo short rows, go ahead with them.)

So the instructions on short row 4 should also say (not counting yo) ? Just to be clear (I am overly cautious now that I have ripped my work out twice) i should not purl that stitch in the last picture? I thought that might be the case but I the instructions dont specifically say that.

Yes, in each case, knit and purl rows, you want 2 sts (not counting the yo) before the gap made by the last turn. The instructions don’t specify but it’s part of the short row. I’ve added it in to row 4 in bold.

Short-Row 3 raglan dec row: Yo, *knit to 3 sts before raglan m, ssk, k1, sl m, k1, k2tog; rep from * 3 more times, knit to 2 sts before last left front neck gap (not counting yo), turn (8 sts dec’d)—196 (208, 224, 240, 264, 280, 296) sts.
Short-Row 4: Yo, purl to BOR, then cont to purl to
2 sts before last right front neck gap (not counting the yo), turn.
Rep last 2 short-rows 3 more times

It’s fine to be cautious. You’ve come this far on the sweater and you want it to be as perfect as you can make it.

Hopefully this is correct. I finished short row 3 & 4 three more times. I knitted around to first gap. I knitted the two st and then (in the photo below, i am about to knit the yo and the 1st stitch on the other side of the gap together. I think this is right but just want to confirm. I ran out of light pink with my scrap yarn and had to use the dark. No significance to the change in colour. Once you confirm this looks correct, i will complete the sample and move back to the sweater.

That looks good and it looks correct. You should see minimal holes where the yoke was turned.

Hallelujah! After three attempts and so much help and encouragement from you I finally got it! Very happy with the results. I am finally able to move on to doing the garter stitch pattern. I have left the lifeline in till I do a new one but I truly send you heartfelt thanks for your guidance and support. Lesson learned is to really, really read the pattern. If I had of read “gap” instead if thinking “marker” it would have made more sense. I love that I learned something new and it really encourages me to try new patterns.

Well done, you! It’s going to be lovely.

Make sure you post a picture when it’s done

Done! Thank you Salmonmac for all your help. If I do this pattern again, i would definitely use a good quality wool. This is a cheap acrylic yarn that my sister picked and the flaws in the yarn and in the knitting are glaring. But its all learning and I love doing it.

You can see the spot where the short rows were and the gaps were picked up but I don’t think you’d see that with a good wool.

So nicely done! It’s a great looking sweater.

We are often our own worst critics. Little blips just form part of the pattern.

i am thrilled with how well this fit my sister. The little gift pack was the sweater, the flower, fingerless mitts and a heart shaped lavender sachet.

Mmm-mmm, gorgeous. Your sister looks beautiful in the sweater, and the accompanying gifts are all lovely.

It looks great! Good for you for persevering. On a side note, my mum has similar slippers to your sister - she clearly has good taste in footwear!
